2008 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Sumatra Black

Flywheel timing hole

Hello all, long time forum reader. I have serviced/maintained my 2008 TD4 for the past 4 years and decided to change timing belt… no beer after, ended up putting everything back together. I did lots of reading here and looked up videos.

Camshaft locking was ok, pin went in as per manual and plenty online diagrams (7 o’clock position). I did however struggle to insert pin into flywheel. No matter what I did, taking the camshaft pin out and rotating the engine some more, trying again, the flywheel pin slot not apparent, visually identifiable.

Next i will buy an endoscope/phone usb camera and position it at the flywheel as i rotate the engine to figure out which slot/hole in the flywheel it’s meant to locate into.

Yes I had trouble with finding the hole the first time "ooh err missus"

Once you do find it you will wonder why you had problems . From memory there is a kind of square metal piece on the flywheel just before the hole, that helps to locate it

I used a small inspection mirror, Halfords, Toolstation or Screwfix should have them. Just be sure it is secured to the handle

Make sure the engine is also in the right phase, as it's possible to get the crank 180° out of phase with the cam drive sprocket. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

Thanks all, will have another look and update. Fingers crossed, i did think about compression/exhaust stroke and whether it would affect outcome.

When i did my cambelt i put the camshaft pins in and the flywheel locking pin went straight in 2009 FL2 S now gone

Don't forget No1 cylinder is on the gearbox end, which is different to most other engines out there. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.
