The detachable tow bar question...

Hi All,

Apologies if this is a perennial question but it's probably the thing that's going to kill off my purchase and we have been looking for best part of 6 months now for a decent FL2.

We've put a deposit on a 2009 TD4 HSE Auto, which has the LR detachable tow bar fitted. But there's no detachable bit in the car.

The dealer seems confident they can find one but having had exactly the same experience with our Saab 9-3 and failed to find the detachable part anywhere over several years of searching I have my doubts.

Spent a good few hours looking for one last night on ebay and no joy.

I think I know the LR branded fitting is a Thule/Brink, any idea if there's anywhere, breakers etc, that would have one?

TBH I'm a bit tired of this, I don't know what possesses owners to hang on to the hitch, or for dealers not to actually check they have all the parts when they take a trade in.

Any positive thoughts?

I wouldn’t worry about it. They’re not that good in my opinion.
A fixed towbar is a far better proposition - no rattle from the detachable part not properly tight in its holder - there’s nothing you can do about it.

Mine was dealer fitted to my first FL2 and subsequently transferred by me to the current car… some six or seven years of frequently towing a 1.6 tonnes caravan with no rattles or loose fitting. No complaints from me on that score

Thanks for the info, looking at the Nova leisure site the current detachable tow bar kit says a bumper cut out is required.

I'm fairly sure mine doesn't have that so can I check whether yours does before I quote the part NBR to then?

Mine does have a bumper cut out although it is a very small and discreet.

That’s strange, I’ve got the same tow at as that one , and my bumper has not got any cutouts . Maybe there are packing pieces that have been omitted.

Both, my previous car (MY10 XS) and my current MY13 HSEL needed the same small cut out so I guess the rear bumper cover didn’t change when the car was face-lifted in MY11. It is not really visible unless you are looking for it though.

The fitting instructions here show the cut out requirement at page 11 / fig.19, the cut out at page 12 / fig 23 and provide a cutting template at page 16.

Hi,
the detachable bar does come up for sale every now and again
But
if your needing one there wont be any for months and months, then just as you sort something there will be 2 pop up just down the road from you Laughing

Have a go with the search button and search for "detachable towbar" look for the threads in the forsale sections and you will see what sort of things come up, how much and how often.

There not too difficult to source and fit with standard bars, try the dealer as a deal breaker if not done and if there That easy to find the removable bit they can find one for the next FL2 their selling

Thumbs Up .
my first ever FL2 and I did keep it longer than most other cars!
But its now gone way up Norf

After going through three Thule detachable towbars, according to Thule, every time they modified the towbar because of rattling, the receiver and hook was modified, was advised by Thule that they are not compatible and not to fit newer hooks into older receivers. p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior
