What Car Next

Hi folks. I left here in December last year after moving from an Fl2 to a Disco Sport. The DS is a lovely comfortable car to drive, but it has been terribly unreliable. Questionable electrical issues (all traction control disabled in cold weather), a failed sensor in the DPF and now it needs new rear discs and pads at 7000 miles and LR don't feel this is something that should be covered under warranty despite there being an open LR notice for DS from 2016 onwards about rear brake disc judder.

So, I feel like cutting my losses before the inevitable oil dilution issues kick in, or whatever other woes the car holds for me.

But I'm utterly stuck as to what to go for. I need something reliable, so not an LR. It does need to be 4 wheel drive because of where I live. Ideally an auto, because I'm lazy. And that's it. Other than being comfortable for 4 people. Budget of around £32k. Newer and lower mileage obviously better.

Cheers FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues
2019 DS. Terribly unreliable.
Sold DS for a 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Fingers crossed....
Sold Outlander for a 2014 SD4 SE Tech because I’m mental
Now greatly regret selling the Outlander. MPG of the FL2 is atrocious and so are the fuel bills. Fun though 😎
Couldn’t afford the fuel bills so back to an older Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Significantly better than I remembered it to be…

So your option is a late FL2 and spend the rest on a REALLY nice holiday with the family, or the last of the DS before they went stupid hybrid.

I have to admit to being biased.
The wife (my soul mate) passed away 2 weeks ago, we knew she had at best 2 years and spent a small fortune (more than a DS) on memorable holidays. The FL2 was absolutely brilliant in every weather and every condition for 185,000 miles.
Family and circumstances meant that the FL2 was to be changed, we have ended up with a late model (MY2019) DS240. No oil dilution that I know about, I know that the rear brakes are made of chocolate but at 30k they are still serviceable, and they lasted 40K on the previous DS. So in my opinion a keeper.

Or you could buy a 4x4 that in reality is a road car with 4x4 for better traction on wet tarmac rather than when the going gets interesting.
Like I said biased I HAVE to get to work or don't get paid, when (not if) I get involved in an accident I need to be as sure as I can be, that I will be at work next day. Being self employed and losing two colleges (at the wheel) doing the same line of work focuses my priorities. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

So sorry to hear that Andy, but nice to hear you had some serious memory making time near the end.

I only need 4x4 because I live on a private sloped dirt track that is terrible in the winter and even the roads round about don't get gritted or cleared enough. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues

You could try a modern petrol plug in hybrid 4 wheel drive.

My mate has a Vauxhall Grandland X PHEV, it seems very well equipped and looks nice.

And it uses virtually no fuel when running around locally.

Vauxhall are now owned by Peugeot, so it is the Peugeot 3008 in a light disguise.

2 Freelander 2s is more tempting than you'd think 😂

I'll check out the Grandland 2. Was considering the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV as my neighbour has one and is very happy with it, minis the cabin being slightly dated. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues

Mitsubishi no longer going to be selling in UK. I'd not want to buy one with no dealer support network Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

To follow on from my "what???" I've now googled and yeah. That's not ideal. They claim to still be present for 10 years after leaving. Such a gamble. Obviously the point of going as new as possible is for reliability and warranty. Might need to look into this more. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues

I had looked at the Karoq - nice car, however the 4x4 from what I can see, at least in used, is only available in diesel. If I'm being sensible about this, a hybrid is the right choice for almost all of my driving. The Outlander PHEV is almost perfect, just a bit dated inside. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues

Hi,
Porsche Macan Diesel Shocked

although reading why 4x4, if your talking winter/icy/cold conditions (not just deep mud!) then a set of True winter tyres
(or possible winter rated AT's)
Correct tyres make a big difference to traction (and thats stopping as well as going forward)

If we were going to stay with 2 cars not 1 then a Macan would be on the cards to replace the FL2 (may be next year?).

Thumbs Up .
my first ever FL2 and I did keep it longer than most other cars!
But its now gone way up Norf
