Off Topic:- acetylene cylinder

wading through my partners garage and trying to tidy it up, I have found a 4 foot high full acetylene cylinder, anyone any ideas how to get rid of this ??

I also found 2 calor gas bottles and 2 x 5 foot tall cylinders of oxygen and argon , , , found a bloke on Gumtree who took them away for free as he actually makes garden barbecue / fires out of them, he didn't want to risk the acetylene. According to the internet it is a very unstable substance, so I guess it doesnt like horses . . Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

Its free to anyone , otherwise how did I get rid ??

I think we all know the old joke, she was only the welders daughter, but she had acetylene t**s Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter 2017 SEAT Ateca 4drive 2.0 xcellence (May 2022 -

Ring BOC . They will have a local depot . 90% certainty it will be one of theirs . Tell them you have found a bottle of Acetylene in the garage . The cylinder is their property * and they have a duty of care to retrieve it . Donโ€™t mention the cylinders you gave to the barbecue man Whistle

* There should be the supplier name somewhere on the bottle 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

I agree with Martyn.

A good friend of mine works for BOC and he makes arrangements to collect such cylinders. ESPECIALLY the Acetylene, as these are bombs when they go up.

People have died cutting cylinder to make into BBQ's

I'm not going to list them all, but just type ....'man dies cutting gas cylinder' into Google.

All acetylene cylinders contain a porous honeycomb material called a monolithic mass. They also contain a solvent (acetone) which is absorbed by the porous mass. The acetylene dissolves in the acetone and holds the acetylene in a stable condition.
This is why acetylene cylinders are so heavy.
The monolithic mass may sometimes contain asbestos too. Jules

If you look at the valve on the top - you need a square key to open a BOC bottle.
If it has a wheel valve like a tap on top itโ€™s an Air Products cylinder.

Hi,
yes contact AirProducts Thumbs Up

if BOC get back to you for more details tell them you have identified it as an AP cylinder as if they turned out to collect it and its not theirs they can not legally take it. (so wasted time/cost for everyone!)

ALL gas cylinders are potential bombs, if there IN a fire and the pressure increases, many have release valves, a Propane its normally in the valve head and its why you should transport them stood up with the valve head in the gas area.

Acetylene get a special mention as you can get an Exothermic reaction inside the cylinder

Some household waste site will accept gas cylinders (they have a cage for them) but some may question is it "waste from your house" and not a business? you would have to check transport requirements as well not just in the boot of your car!

The cylinders are owned by the company and their property so the bbq man has no legal title to them or to alter and then sell them, but once there gone there gone Shocked

Best way just speak to AP, tell them they have been dumped or that you are clearing out a family's garage and have come across it and they had no account, if they ask you to return them to local depot say you have no car suitable to carry it

Thumbs Up .
my first ever FL2 and I did keep it longer than most other cars!
But its now gone way up Norf

thanks riverblanche

there is always PLAN B : -Dig a hole in your garden, half bury bottle then ring the law and tell them you think you've uncovered a WWII German bomb, they'll sort it out for you, and you can sell your "story" to the papers ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜‚
