I'm looking at buying a FL2 TD4 SE and have some questions...

I've read some horror stories about front/rear diff damage due to differences in tread depth.

Is this something that is being overstated or is it a real issue?

My concern is that I'd be looking to get some 17" rims at some stage (5-6 rims) and AT tyres so if I head out into the bush, I've spares. But no point having them if the drivetrain is damaged by using them.

The tyre / diff problem was on the freelander 1 which caused damage to its drivetrain IRD (intermediate reduction drive) if tyre sizes were not evenly matched. The Freelander 2 has a totally different drivetrain using haldex as its 4x4 system. Mismatched tyres on the FL2 do not cause a problem. Having said that I do swap my tyres from front to back every 5k miles to even out the wear so that it gets 4 identical tyres each time they need changed. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

I have just put my 2 unused spares on the front. Have been around Australia with different tread depths. In Halls Creek we got a replacement tyre. One can't be too fussy when there is only one single tyre available. Any tyre is better than 3 wheels!

Just go bush with the tyres you have, you just have to be a bit more careful. Pack tyre repair kit & compressor. Almost forgot, TPMS. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Thanks for the replies, have a good compressor from my Subaru, need a repair kit. The TPSM sounds interesting, I’ll investigate. I’m going to get the car I’ve been looking at. Has full service history from new. Main pain is it having 19” wheels so need to dig up 5x 17”s at some point.
I fitted Dunlop Grandtrek AT5s to the Subaru and went up a size for a bit more ground clearance - great tyres.

Smaller rims are better, just have to be more careful with 19 inch. But, the biggest problem out there is destroying a tyre. If you are aware from your TPMS that you have a leak & save a tyre, you are in an infinitely better place than no more spares.

You're in the Kimberley & can keep plugging tyres & keep your spare. That is a lot of peace of mind! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
