United Kingdom 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Manual Tambora Flame
No power uphill

Hi all. I have a 2007 FL2, 2.2TD4 (the no DPF one) 140k miles.

I have just discovered that the car has no power at all going up hill. It feels like the turbo isn't kicking in. No acceleration/torque regardless of how far I put my foot to the floor. I've just taken it over Haldon Hill near Exeter, which is normally 5th or 6th gear with plenty of power in reserve. I crawled up in 4th and had to drop to 3rd at the last minute.

It's fine, flat and downhill where power delivery feels normal the turbo makes a small whistle - the turbo was replaced 3 years ago using an OEM Garret. Intercooler hose was replaced then also so I hope it's not split again.

It's been recently serviced with all new filters including fuel filter and an oil change.

I've just given the MAF sensor a clean as that seems to be a culprit. Not had the codes read yet but hoping someone might have had a similar issue so that I know what to look out for.

Intercooler failed?

Similar fault to failed intercooler hose failure. Mine split along the seam - well the second one did, the first one had a sheet of ice shoved through it - wading incident Big Cry Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

I've taken a look - there are plenty of stones lodged in it. I guess this could be causing a problem. No off road or wading for me, just plenty of motorway miles!

Edit: I might be getting the intercooler and the main rad confused.

A lucky escape and warded off the grim reaper again (what I call the AA man)!

There had been an oil leak previously, which the mechanic had fixed and cleaned the engine on the service. It was from the breather pipe at the back on the left, where the sections join - the clip seal was missing =(

The oil had got into some wiring (or loom?) by the Turbo. They cleaned that and it's fine now. I don't know the specifics, but got it back today, good as new. He dropped the key with my boss, who passed on the message about what they did.

Driving home it feels very good on power. It must not have been performing even on flat ground too, but I hadn't noticed.

There have been so many roadworks this last couple of weeks that my best route to work was 40 mins of town driving where you can't really boot it to try it out. I had been testing the car for a few days on hills and couldn't always replicate and it wasn't until I took it up the A38 that it was clear there was a turbo problem of some sort.

Thanks all for your suggestions! I'm glad this fix didn't need any parts!
