Engine oil for vehicles with diesel particulate filters (DPF) must have low ash oils that meet the recommend specification. Within the combustion process a small amount of engine oil is burnt off (don't worry this is by design), hence why you need to regularly check and top up levels in-between services. These burnt off bits of oil could potentially, and very quickly, block or permanently damage a DPF (through physical particles and DPF damaging burnt oil gases). This is where a Low SAPS (Sulphated Ash, Phosphorous, Sulphur) motor oil comes in, it's basically a low Sulphated Ash, Phosphorous and Sulphur based oil, if a normal engine oil was used these elements could quickly block and the gases could terminally damage the internal structure of a DPF.

AJ918 , Thank you very much for the informant answer to my question. Now I will go get some 934. We used to sell Millers oils in our farm shop years ago but now my son who is "Plantfitter.com" sells "Rock Oils" within his business and to the motorcycle race clan that he is involved with as a racer but I am not sure they qualify 934. The filter that I had gritted teeth humour with was attacked from underneath , only long tyre lever from above. I prob distorted the clips on the filter case nut after the 27mm long spanner slipped off under the severe strain of trying to move it. Then I couldn't get the 12 sided ring end of the spanner over the nut so managed to get the short six sided socket levered /clipped on and with a 14"inch long hinged ratchet on the socket it decided to move!. On the Discovery 3 we had the filter was in the vee of the engine and couldn't have been easier to remove. |

The flex headed 27mm ratchet spanner is your friend.

Thanks I LIKE CHIPS for looking the oil up, Son (plantfitter.com) couldn't be bothered looking and holds 3 different 5-30's in stock and Rock Oil site for me isn't the best to find specific criteria. |

I was stumped the first time I attempted an oil change on the F2 also, my 27mm socket and ratchet weren't even nearly doing the job and short of removing the radiator and intercooler I decided it would wait until the special bendy spanner arrived. Another vote for Millers XF Premium C1 5w-30. 👍 Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948 2014 Orkney grey Freelander SD4 GS. 2004 Zambezi silver Discovery 2 Td5 (Gone) 1963 Surf blue Morris Mini Minor Super de Luxe (my little toy) |

I would also include Smith & Allan lubricants in the list of alternative suppliers

My 27ml Kamaza is 12 sided on the ring end and just squeezed and then jumped , maybe to do with the clips on the hex of the filter housing, the half inch square drive long swivel ratchet and a shallow six sided impact socket got it off. nothing 12 sided was going to get it off. I have wondered if the previous servicers ever took it off or just over tightened it.

When I change my filter I just nip it up (about 25Nm I'd guess), yet its always very tight to remove.

It was one of plantfitter.com guys who landed with the ratchet and he put it back on as well so maybe need a long bar on the ratchet to shake it loose next time |
