I had to replace a piston on mine.
The balancer shafts need to come out, which means they need to be locked with the timing position, before removing them. Annoyingly the block extension needs removing before the balancer shafts can be removed, and the oil pump also needs removing, as it's bolted to the balancer shaft casing. There are also shims between the balancer block and the engine block, which set the gear mesh with the crank, so make sure those go back in the correct place. You'll also need new rod cap bolts, for any rods removed, and finding the correct torque settings for the bolts seemed difficult too, I asked on here.
You'll need the special sealant for the block extension and sump, but be aware that it's extremely toxic, so take precautions when using it.
It's a long old job, as so much needs removing to get at the balancer shaft block, but it is doable at home, on your back.
Here's why I needed to replace a piston.
