2013 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Auto Baltic Blue

Apologies for the late addition - I've just found this thread.

I have a similar problem with my '14 Tdi. (50K Km) When the gearbox has been working fairly hard, as in an hour of stop/go traffic, when I slow right down at a junction and very nearly come to a halt, and then when I press the accelerator nothing happens. The car hesitates and it takes two or three presses before it leaps forwards. No dash indications or other warnings.

It also happened today when I was out driving over dirt roads at about 30 - 40 kph for about 30 mins and then onto tarmac where it happened at junctions. The outside air was +30C.

After the first incident my local specialist thought it might be a turbo hose problem but when he checked the diagnostics it said the auto clutch was overheating. He carried out a transmission service.

It only seems to happen when it is in high ambient temperatures and/or working trrough the low gears quite a lot.

Has anyone else experienced this and found a solution?

I don't think outside air temperature has anything to do with it or hours of dirt roads.

Not sure what point you are making other than your vehicle is sitting idling in 47degrees - as it should if all its cooling systems are working!

My point was that when I'm driving around in winter or less stressful situation, my FL2 drives normally. Why does the clutch overheat under stress?

There is barely a reference to an overheating clutch in any of my internet searches.

I've towed my twin axle caravan up and down mountain passes in France in high summer temperatures, absolutely no issue or complaints from the auto box. I dare say it was pretty warm then. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Have been in Southern France & we had a week of 43°C, the heat hitting the villages facing south for the sun, said I would never complain about Sydney weather again. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Well now we all know they drive well in high temperatures!

The point about my question is: What can cause a fully serviced auto box clutch to overheat?

Any inputs greatfully received.

HI, most auto boxes I have had over the years are programmed to put the engine in Safe Mode to take loading off, and allow the Transmission Fluid to cool below a certain threshhold. Modern gearboxes need fluid changes after 80k miles. Manufacturers say not to, to cut servicing costs. Landrover now say to change oil at 80k for the eight speed gearboxes. Volvo use Aisin Warner gearboxes, and say to change oil at 80k miles if towing or in high ambient temperatures. The Aisin Warner gearbox has the filter behind third gear, so one has to strip the box to change the filter. I have a Jaguar which I put a second OIl Cooler in the front for hot weather. Kenlowe used to do kits for extra coolers for towing. The export FL2 has a double cooler fan pack in the parts list.

Thanks Jagracer, that's food for thought.

I think I'll now have to extend my search into some deep tech websites.

Hi Wick
Wondering if you have any live data on the gearbox temperatures

Sadly not. All I can do is ask the specialist when it goes in to have the diagnostic analysis next week.

If I find anything out, I post it here.
