When fitting remove the plastic covers with the key, then peel back the rubber strip that runs along the top of the bar ( just a few inches ) beneath is a bolt to allow the length of the bar to be adjusted. |

I have a second hand set I bought on here from Dave47, immaculate in their original bag. I havent actually used them yet but just reading the posts on here and watching the video will mean I'll not be standing scratching my head the first time I use them. The rear one will fit, the ends are spring loaded (I have pulled them apart to have access inside the extrusion for modifications). I am using 4 cross bars permanently fixed in 2 pairs, & they are a touch longer as I have flattened them. The very rear crossbar, as a pair, in my situation is a whisker tight as a pair, but the ends do push in enough. You need to try harder!

Thanks everyone for your help, my cross bars are spring loaded, it looks like as suggested I'll just have to push harder.

Make sure you have the crossbars facing forward. There is an arrow printed on the bottom of the bottom plastic cover. Which needs to point to the front. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

@lightwater, 4 bars is interesting... but I was under the impression that it was the rails that limit the carrying capacity.

Obviously, I can't speak for Lightwater but The 4 bars I have are positioned with 3 at the rear to give additional support to a large tent in a soft bag. The 4th one at the front is then used for long items, though having four they don't sit flat.

Sorry to disappoint but it's not a roof tent.

A lot of cars here have 3 or 4 crossbars. I was looking for heavy duty roof rack solutions as 75kg gross is not enough & found some heavy duty crossbars but using LR rails, which said 100kg. But then I had a height issue as I only just scraped under our garage door with LR rails. So it gave my the idea that the weight issue is partly with the crossbars. So having 4 crossbars spreads the load. So the original 12.5kg plus another 3.6kg for the second pair of crossbars leaves you with 83.9kg net. It is far better than a roof platform, which I had which was 20kg plus the loss of the original 12.5kg leaving only 42.5kg net, & never solid on 2 crossbars even with the modifications I made. My load is tightly packed on the roof which will have less stresses than long canoes. The problem we have down under is our corrugated roads, & that have knocked my roof rails apart. You do see a lot of welded roof racks with cracked welds here. Roof rack rail repair heavy load upgrade https://www.freel2.com/forum/topic35376.html 4 crossbars is the best solution. If they need to be level, remove the rubber strip on the front & rear crossbars & slide a piece of 3 x 20mm 316 stainless steel in which you can tap & screw into it for packing up the height.
