Batt life

Hi ..... what would you consider normal for the life of a starter batt? My 2012 model is still running on the original batt,(Varta) should I be thinking of getting it replaced?

Usual view is normal life is 5 years.
Mine is coming up for 10 and showing signs of starting to struggle to start the vehicle if left for a few days and stop/start no longer works.
So general consensus of opinion would be to replace but if it's still working OK then probably OK to wait a while longer.

United Kingdom 2010 Freelander 2 TD4_e HSE Manual Barolo Black

Mine is branded " Landrover" so I do not know if its original as I have very little service history with the car.

2010 model, stop / start seems to stop working if the car is left for a couple of weeks without much use.

Seems to me that the longevity depends on use / maintance. I have a halfords deep cycle battery on my boat that sees very little use, but has never let me down. It is trickle charged for around 6 months of the year, now around 10 years old.

I have a Varta 120 a/h on my old tractor, way over 10 years old, always trickle charged, still going strong.

However on my ride on mowers, I seem to replace the battery every 3 years or so..............I have just bought 2 oxford trickle charges for them, on sale a £20 each, so they are constantly trickle charged now. I will see if it was worth the investment in the chargers, as the batterys are around £50 each time.

Hi,
replaced ours a couple of weeks ago the date stamp on the post was 18/13 (18th week of 2013) so original fitment
the stop/start had not been working for a few months and the sleeping voltage of the car was showing 12.4 and down to 12.2 after a couple of weeks.
Replaced with a Yuasa YBX9115 at £127 and 4 year warranty

Just checked sleeping voltage before using today (its been 2 weeks since it was fitted and not used the car!) and it was 12.7

car started quicker and s/s now working again Thumbs Up after a bit of a run, about 40 mile trip.

after about 7-8 years your on borrowed time but as said if working ok leave it alone, first sign is the s/s not working though so it may be worth you checking the sleeping voltage of your car and start looking for a Black Friday/closing down/New years or some other excuse for a discount

Thumbs Up .
my first ever FL2 and I did keep it longer than most other cars!
But its now gone way up Norf

I’m amazed how long it’s lasted. I had 2 banner leisure batts in my motorhome they went in just over 4 years. (Replaced Seth varta lfd90s). May see what it’s like when/if it gets colder. 2012 GS

To check the 'date'of the battery.

look at the negative terminal and stamped on top is the WK/YR date code.

Hi,
I still have an Odyssey pc1500dt that would have been bought about 2005/6 for a D2 we did a lot of greenlaning with and use it as a spare for the caravan it does not hold charge as long as it used to which is why is not on a car now but still alive,
if not in the best of health Laughing

4 years they are on borrowed time. I don't want to be in the outback a 1000km from help. A battery amortised over 4 years doesn't cost much.

My 64 plate with Stop Start failed earlier this year, I don’t think AGM batteries last as long as traditional lead acid ones, progress eh? 64 plate TD4 SE Santorini Black

At 8 years old it will be very near to the end of its life and the fact that the stop/start doesn’t work anymore points to this. With winter coming up, is it worth chancing getting caught out rather than perhaps changing it in advance of a non-start? What are you going to waste by changing it before it lets you down, 20 quid? You might even get that back in saved fuel when your stop/start is working again!

I changed the batteries on both my FL2 and my Evoque at about 6 years. The grief I’d get off of the wife if she got stuck out in it wouldn’t be worth it! Laughing Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
Evoque SD4 Dynamic Lux Auto
Present: Audi A3 S Line.

A few years ago neighbours came running up to me knowing I had jumper leads seeing me jump start others with old batteries.

They needed to get to hospital quickly as the wife was about to drop one! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
