here's one for the boffins .

what actually happens to the drive train when you select the different 4 wheel drive options ? in laymen's terms if poss

Nothing. All that changes are some parameters in the electronics which control the haldex, braking and electronic throttle. No mechanical changes at all.

For great 'get up & go' .........on a tarmac road, at traffic lights, select SAND mode. When you go ..... you really go.

Caution this can burn out your clutch quicker than normal.

But it is a heap of fun.
