Freelander 2 Headlights Staying On

Hoping someone out there can help.
My 2007 FL 2.2 GS has developed a headlight fault. For no reason having started it up I found the headlights And side lights are constantly on. Headlight switch does not do anything. No high beam, no front or rear fog lights and no cruise control. Steering wheel controls only turn volume up and down, nothing else. All other lights such as tail and brake lights fully operational.
I know there is a head light module somewhere under the dash on the passenger side but I’m led to believe it’s to do with the levelling system rather than the main lights. I’ve even disconnected the headlight switch altogether but regardless the lights stay on.
Can anyone give guidance ?

Thanks 2007 2.2 GS Td4

Are you sure that the fault isn't in the stalk? If the cruise control isn't working and everything else is screwed up then it sounds like more than a headlights issue. I had something like this once on a Renault Megane and had to replace the stalk. These things are complicated 3 dimensional switches. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Thanks for your reply, YES I’m thinking along the same lines. There’s an electronic circuit board after the slip ring on the steering column. Both steering column stalks connect to it. Can’t for the life of me figure out why the headlights would be linked to it however but I suppose anything’s possible.
I know that there’s a post with exactly the same issues on another site. This was fixed with the assistance of a electrical car specialist. They diagnosed a broken wire under the passenger side dash but I’m cautious of accepting this as definite. 2007 2.2 GS Td4

Hi Wheelspins, did you get this issue resolved in the end?

Not resolved. Issue is that fault comes and goes. What seems to happen is fault more likely when driving at night time rather than daytime. If fault present it’s more likely to go away for a while if driving during the day. I need to get the fault back and have local independent try to acquire fault code. In meantime I’m going to replace the auto headlight and wiper sensor behind rear view mirror as it’s a cheap replacement compared to dealer prices. Clutching at straws really until fault code found. I know previous similar post was damaged wire under dash but again not sure if same or not due to lack of information on original post. 2007 2.2 GS Td4

I have exactly the same issues as you have described except that it's there all of the time. The headlights used to flicker on and off but now they are on all of the time and cruise control out of action (day or night time).

I've checked the cables in the passenger footwell/behind the glove box looking for a broken wire but can't find any obvious problem. I put the car into the garage this week and they came back with over fifty fault codes from all different modules in the car. I'll have to put it into the auto electrician in the hope that they can pinpoint the problem. The MOT is due very soon so the life of this freelander is in the balance.

A lot of the switch functions are gathered up in the 'Module - Steering Wheel' D407 and signals sent via a CanBus from there.

I would start by looking for bad earths under the passengers mat.

The culprit may be a common earthing point G3D134-1.

This link contains some of the reasoning and a map of the earthing points.

For further info try searching D407 in the wiring diagrams. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Potential fix

I’ve replaced the automatic rain sensor / auto light sensor behind the drivers mirror and have ran the vehicle for now over two weeks with no fault appearing. Crossing my fingers that this is problem solved. 2007 2.2 GS Td4

Wheelspins, why do you "need to get the fault back" to get the fault code? Surely if a fault has been registered it will remain in the record until the fault codes are cleared? 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

My vehicle is just back from the garage. The fault was traced to a broken wire. No power to the main light switch and the problem wire runs from the fuse box under the bonnet, F33, to the body control module in the footwell, connection C21C.
Rather than try and find the break and repair it, a new wire was fitted to bypass the fault. About 2 to 3 hours of work including the fault finding etc.
Hope this helps.
