Oil on intake but what's this component?

Hello, I have a quick question that I hope someone could assist with. I found oil dripping from the air intake which i think had run down onto the exhaust manifold causing a small amount of smoke. I have removed this and cleaned it of oil. I have 2 questions, in doing this I noticed that the air filter had sort of imploded, but why? and secondly, on the air intake there's a small hose running into it, I think the is to do with the crankcase breather but not 100% on that, if it is, is there a filter that can be replaced under neath and if so how? hopefully photos would have been up loaded to help. Thank you in advance, Andrew

Ive never seen an air filter looking like that before. Has it got wet at some time (ie been wading deeper than it should)? Jules

Sadly I haven’t no. If I do anything even as much as going up green lanes my wife thinks the car has something wrong with it. It has been pretty wet on the motorways recently. The only other thing I feel it could have been was my 2 year old was sitting on my lap and stated to tap the start/stop so the car would go to start the cut out as he pushed the button again so when I took him off my lap the start the car there was a faint back fire.

Has it got the correct wheel arch protector on the passenger side front, it was designed to stop water ingress into the airbox.

Seen that happen on blowbacks on petrol engines a few times but not on derv engines, you did mention a small backfire so that is your clue.
