Could this be Alternator fault?

Hello All,

About a week ago, I noticed this sound ( see attached link for video) when I rev up of take my foot off/on the gas pedal.

Thought it was my power steering pump and replaced with a new one but it’s still making the same strange sound.

Just been doing abit of research and I’m beginning to think it maybe be a faulty alternator ? ( replaced about six month ago with a refurbished one)

The noise is still the same with AC on or Off. And AC works fine.

Anyone with information about how to solve this will be really appreciated.

Thank you. Regards,

You mean the chirping noise?
Definitely not power steering, those whine. I'd say tensioner or overrun pulley on the alternator, maybe both? Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

Have you tried to isolate it by removing the sepintine belt if the sound does away you will know it one of the aux units if still there then it could be one of the timing belt components such as the tensioner or idler bearing.

Plus one for that. I had the same noise nearly two years ago.
It was both.

Tensioner and pulley was replaced last year with gates. Hopefully will be the alternator. Thank you. Regards,

Would agree with AJ918 Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.
Freelander now gone.

Okay, after replacing the aux belt, tensioner and pulley, its still making the noise . Beginning to think it has something to do with the ac compressor. Read a few articles about low gas in the compressor can be the cause. Booked it in for a ac top up tomorrow.

Will keep you updated.

Thanks you Regards,
Germplus.

Crankshaft pulley can soften the bonding rubber and make a knocking sound, also affect the timing when it gets bad. I would look at the Aircon Compressor bearing if its been run low on gas, as the gas contains an oil charge.

Have you checked the overrun pulley on the alternator? Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

+1

I think that this is an often overlooked problem, that occurs more often than we realise, and causes snatching of the fan belt. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
