Drivetrain Slack and Performance issues

Hi All

Just taken the my 07 freelander SE TD4 manual in for its 45k service and have an 08 TD4 manual as a courtsey car. Although the 08 car only has 15k it has highlighted some significant differences that confirm my supiscions that all is not well with my car:

Driveline slack - in my car it is very difficult to change gear smoohtly, with a lot of "slack" and jerkiness coming off and then re-applying the power. It feels like an engine mount is broken and the engine is moving around too much. It has always felt like this from when we got it (at 19k). The courtesey car is nice and tight with none of this slack nad much easier to change gear smoothly. In comparison mine feels like mine has done 100k!

Performance - my car has always felt a bit breathelss and frankly lacking in oomph - as I normally drive a mini cooper s I have always put this down to the diffeence between a small hot hatch and a largeish 4x4, however now I have driven another TD4 manual which is smoother, feels much more powerful and has averaged 4 mpg more on the same run compared to my car I think I have an issue. I notice when I turn my car off there is a buzzing followed by a click that happens 3 or four times in succession coming from near the turbo, I didn't hear this on the courtesy car.

I have raised both with the rather condescending and rude service advisor at Lancaster Reading how tried to fob me off with the "they're different spec" and "they're different years" reasons to explain the differences but I have insisted on them checking - althogh I strongly suspect I'll get a "no fault found" answer based on my recorded faults.

My question is has anyone else come across issues with driveline slack that seem excessive and is there any significant differenfce between the drivetrain of an 07 car compared to an 08 car that would explain the diffrerences??

Thanks in advance

BigJC

Scotland 2009 Freelander 2 TD4_e HSE Manual Lago Grey

my car is an 09 HSE but my brother in law has an 07 GS which I have driven a few times and it drives the same as mine. ( nice and tight and very perky for it's size, especially torquey )

it certainly sounds if you do have some problems.............let us know how you get on.

Iain

Mine is a 07 HSE done 30000+ KM and is as tight as when new (no slack). Have not noticed any difference since new either and is always perky and touqey as Iain mentions with his experiance. Very Happy

Insist on a back-to-back test drive with the service manager or workshop controller in yours and one of a similar age or mileage from their sales stock

OK, got the car back.

They found a leaking intake hose so have refitted and tightened. They also found (and cleared) three error codes - throttle position sensor, speed control sensor and boost sensor. The service advisor said they had cleared the codes and to "see how it goes" which is frankly appalling - I have reported an issue, they found errors so cleared the errors and gave the car back hoping that it would magically fix itself! I picked the car up and made it clear that I am not happy - the service advisor must be one of the most condescending people I have ever met. I didn't have time to get them to do a back to back test as it was 5:45 and I needed to get home.

On the way home the car felt like a different vehicle, the on/off throttle issues are gone, it seems to pull much better and revs freely (no pun intended!) So it seems that the leaking hose was the issue, which I guess may account for the boost sensor issues. It seems that despite being the kind of person who makes me seriously re-consider which garage I use, the car is fixed. Not sure about the economy as it seems to be all uphill from the garage to home so can't compare to the trip to work.

Anyway, happy bunny now and hopefully we'll also see better fuel economy in the future,

Thanks for your comments,
