You have to remember that in his eyes he was just doing his bit by trying to raise £1,000 for the NHS, that he raised an awful lot more is not the point.

Agreed, the public took him to their hearts but that doesn’t merit a knighthood. A few days earlier we were lauding a lady over 100 who’d survived the virus and in the following few days another elderly lady was climbing her stairs to raise money. Captain Tom just happened to be in the right place at the right time. All said and done it was a marvellous achievement but it was the publics generosity that made it a great one - after all, he still only walked the same distance |
