Birmingham cars could be banned from drive thru city centre

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-birmingham-51088499

Birmingham cars could be banned from driving through city centre.

The proposals mean:

People can still drive into the city from certain areas and would have to drive back out via the surrounding ring road

Journeys straight through the city centre would no longer be allowed

Public transport would be the "preferred choice" for travelling in and out of the city

City centre streets to become pedestrianised and integrated with public transport
.

To be fair, Birmingham has been a no-go area by car for over 2 years now, as the Loony Council have made a total Horlicks of the city centre. Unfortunately, all councils in the uk seem incapable of looking beyond the end of their retirement dates and have fudged planning for the future for years. One thing that you can rest assured on, Birmingham will not be the last city to totally ban the motor car!

This is what you get with a Labour majority

Quote:
101 councillors:-

Labour - 67
Conservative - 25
Liberal -8
Green - 1

This will kill city centre shops & offices & promote out-of-town development & internet sales.

Maybe they should make all the streets one-way only; away from the City centre ?

What a mess.

There does seem to be a correlation between councils that are punitively targeting diesel drivers and the fact that they all seem to be Labour run. Ironic given that it was the Labour government that encouraged everyone to buy into diesel

It’s not odd though, this Labour Party is now controlled by the momentum movement which as we all know are a bunch of weirdo leftie long haired hippies......or am I being a bit leftist there? Laughing Regards

Private cars are already banned in parts of Birmingham.

Try driving near Broad Street, Brindleyplace area, as it's complete hell when you are trying to
visit businesses in that area.

A lot of Birmingham streets are also limited to 20mph.

I hate driving in Birmingham, but sometimes have to in my job as a field engineer.

Would that be the M6, M5, M42 ??

Luckily since retiring I have absolutely no need to drive into Birmingham anymore. I use the off-peak train if I really must go there for the odd meeting. Jules
