United Kingdom 2013 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Orkney Grey

Thanks for all comment!

It's LR repair centre at Team Valley Gateshead. I have been using them for service and repair since I have got the car, based on the recommendations from this forum users who had been using them. Some even prepare to travel to get to them. At the beginning they were quite competitive but I don't think they are any more.
To be honest I hadn't thought about the timing needed replacing. When I turned up, a few days ago, without any warning they showed me the service schedule and price which involved timing belt replacement without water pump, they insisted it didn't need replacing, but with my repeated concern they said they would look for any sign of leaking. At this point the bill comes to about £800 including MOT. Later on I rang and asked what they think about the pump they said there no need but when I insisted they said it's would be a further £200 to include water pump. At this point the battery failed their test as well as the advisory about the complete rear break discs and pads and the rear offside drop link. I decided that they should replace my rear break, the battery they quoted £270 which I declined but asked if they could fit for me if I bought it elsewhere. I bought a varta f21 from tayna batteries yesterday and will need to look into the drop link replacement. I will try to get the quote from LR TV for the drop link to compare with other LR dealer nearby.

Overall for future reference, from this discussion the timing belt and water pump should come to about £450-500 with LR trained mechanics, anything below is a bonus.

@morayjohny: I think you got a good price there, as I mentioned before they only showed the schedule when I brought the car in for service and MOT I hadn't thought about the timing belt then.

@BumbleB: spot on with the price you paid, especially the auxiliary belt change as well.

@NJSS: I think the consensus here is the haldex oil and filter should be replaced at every 40K miles. Change them every other year may be too often. Yes I named the garage above.

@Seefive: to get the timing belt and water pump for only £375 must be a record, especially you live in the south.

I've had a few people say much the same about TV...

Get quite a few travelling up from the borders to sunny Dundee

Although, it's a hugely false economy to do a belt without water pump. I don't even quote for belt only, the kit comes with a water pump, so it gets fitted. And it's £400 including the pump Thumbs Up

Can't remember the full detail of what was done but when I had the big 10 year service on our 07 XS it came to about £800 including cambelt & water pump plus a load of other stuff & MoT.

As others have said, it's false economy not to replace the water pump at the same time as the cam belt.

Slightly off topic, you have a 13MY car & talk about stop/start? We have a 13MY HSE & that doesn't have stop/start... Is it possible that it's been turned off on ours before we bought it?

I am sure it was not available on later/if not all automatic Freelanders.

Might have been due to avoid lawsuits from Americans driving into things when the engine restarts.

Stop start is available on all later Landrover models including those with automatic gearboxes such as DS or Discovery 4. Also available on American spec vehicles of all makes!

D4 & D5 only available as autos & both have stop/start - time to do some searching as it's got me intrigued now...

Stop start on Freelander only available on models with manual gearbox, not an option on the automatic sadly! Big Cry

Why would you want it?

I have it on my D4 and have disabled it to minimise wear on starter motor, ring gear & more particularly the engine.

Because it helps me get an average of 36mpg on mixed driving as my normal commute has the car stopped at traffic lights for around the same amount of time as is spent actually driving!

I have told this story elsewhere but my son bought a used Renault a few years back and the dealer put a new cambelt on. Just over a year later the water pump failed and threw the belt with disastrous consequences. Cambelts can fail but most issues come from water pumps and tensioner fails which throw the belt.

Should have warned him about buying a, " Diamond of Doom".
