So it’s true that “the price of any top grade boiler on line is around £1400”.........is a bit of a misnomer.

As I said it all depends upon each person’s individual requirements, and the price I quoted is for a only a 48kw system boiler at a discounted price, not list. Regards

David

Lovely i6 has now gone, but not me......

I have always fancied DIY Split Unit Cooling/Heating Air Con Units.

We used them at work on our PortaCabin buildings, and they worked very well. They worked on an 'Air Sourced Heat Pump' principle to both heat and cool the workplace. They are normally equipped with an intelligent temperature control, which works within an internal comfort temperature band for maximum economy.

So far I have only got as far as buying a big long drill bit, for the pipe. (I may be just thinking for a bit longer yet)

PS My home boiler is a Vaillant Ecotech +, I have had it for some years and I am very pleased with it.
It was installed by an independent plumber, who was very good and worked out how to move the installation into the back of my garage. I say this as a couple of the quotes from other (main stream) plumbers said it was not possible.
Unfortunately I am awaiting on my good (but very busy) plumber at the moment.
I managed to over-pressurise my CH system, while changing a radiator stop valve, and have damaged my boiler expansion chamber.

That's the problem, if you find a good tradesman they always are busy on other peoples jobs, although this one is always available, on phone, or flying visit, with advice on how to get it going well enough while I'm waiting. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

One thing no one has mentioned, most independent installers only want the install business. .........therefore the waiting time for a repair appointment can be considerable.
British Gas, on the other hand has it's own dedicated repair engineers who are available 7 days a week and do warranty work for most manufacturers as well as none warranty work.
Just something to consider. Thumbs Up

As for a good boiler, you can't go wrong with a Worcester Bosch. Very Happy

British Gas quoted more than double the price quoted by an independent when I had a new boiler, so definitely get a few quotes first.

Worcester Bosch get my vote also as being the best boilers.

It's also worth getting your old system flushed out if you are keeping the old radiators, so factor that cost into the price.

A word of caution to those upgrading old boiler systems.

Be ready for leaks as the modern Combi Boiler systems work at a higher pressure (mains water) than the older traditional 'Open Vent' systems.

I had to tighten up a few radiator joints, as well as having a leak under bathroom floor. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

A good installer would have checked for leaks and tightened any loose valve connectors.

This might be of interest to anyone with an oil fired Rayburn with pressure jets. My brother in law has had his for several years and had it serviced as usual. His wife overheard a conversation on the phone to his boss where the guy doing the work clearly didn't know what he was doing. Anyway a couple of days later the smoke alarm in the kitchen went off and when they went in they saw this ! There is almost certainly some internal damage due to overheating. I have a similar unit and found that you need a specialist to service it, the guys that do ordinary boilers haven't got a clue.

Yeah, when I had my open vented system power flushed then converted to a sealed system with unvented (mains) hot water, I had two rads spring a pinhole leak - one straight away and one a week later. I ended up changing 4 rads in total as they were nearly as old as the house - 55 years old so they didn’t do too bad! Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

had our boiler changed a year ago, by BG, yes they were the dearest. all done in one day and ours was fairly major work as we had an old power max 185 boiler with 205 ltrs hot storage tank in the middle of the house.
Many of the private companies wouldn't get involved with the power-max and it complexity.
We had an additional 1 year free service contract to follow so that saved 320 quid plus additional discount for the next two years plus 0% finance so better keeping our money in the bank.
all in all we were very pleased with the service and support, The boiler failed the next day as it turned out the filling valve wasn't working , all replaced and sorted in hours.
two of my neighbours have all had boilers fitted by one man bands and they have all had ongoing issues and one had the guy fall ill on install and they were left with hole in roof and no heating for 3 days. Jaguar x-type sport gone

A guy in the village bought an old thatched house and discovered a rather strange heating system about the size of a tall fridge in the kitchen It was basically a large off peak 415v three phase storage heater running pumped wet radiators around the house . None of the local electricians or plumbers would touch it and he had to get the electricity board round to disconnect it God knows where it came from. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

That was a system that the electricity boards were pushing in the early 70's, a friend who worked for the National Grid or whatever it was called then had one installed, it used 3phase as the normal single phase supply became over loaded if all the heaters cut in when the oven was being used. The theory was that except for heating start up one or two of the immersion type heaters would be enough to maintain the temperature, that was a theory and as the years passed it was uneconomical compared to gas or oil.
One advantage was if you were a keen DIYer you could pick up cheap professional tools from liquidation sales like compressors, welders etc. as you had the supply, especially when the boiler was removed. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

I've found that British Gas are reliable, give a good service and come out promptly when they say they will come, they are a bit expensive, but quality always costs. They installed my new boiler 10 years ago and it had problems that turned out to be manufacturing faults. After several visits BG couldn't fix it so they called in the manufacturer who did find and fix the faults all done under guaruntee.

A few years ago a neighbour had a new boiler installed by an independant one man band. Servce was excellent, but then he did live just a few doors away (moved in after I had my new boiler so that's why I didn't use him).

I hear what everyone is saying about BG, being reliable etc etc but what I do find difficult to get my head around is their vastly inflated estimate and all the items on there that to everyone else it seems should be regarded as inclusive - £199 to have an electrician attend, £69 to instal a spur plug, £278 for a flue, £99 to connect condense waste to internal waste . . . . and so on. We have an existing flue, we have a power point to within 2 feet of the existing boiler, a waste pipe . . . I reckon there's going on towards £1000 of unnecessary items on their estimate, which if they were taken off would bring them in line with independents. Seems a lot extra to pay for 'reliability'?
