Oh dear, it doesn’t mean that we’re going to have to drink Australian lager now, does it?! Shocked

It’s a little ironic, that the one country that’s in the headlines for suffering from unprecedented heat and uncontrollable wildfires, should also be encouraging tourists to take unnecessary 20,000 mile return flights.

It looks lovely, perhaps when we leave Europe we can get the UK towed a bit closer to Australia, so that I can visit.

United Kingdom 2010 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Auto Zermatt Silver

Only did one quick tour of limited cities in Australia and New Zealand... working not holidaying.

Started in Brisbane to acclimatise on Saturday and Sunday and worked the Monday. Flew to Sydney that night and did Tuesday and Wednesday in Sydney. Flew Wednesday night to Auckland and did Thursday there, flew Thursday night to Wellington and did Friday there, and flew back to Sydney for the ARIAs at Sydney opera house at the weekend (a flooded red carpet for a change). 2 more nights in Sydney and on the Tuesday on a plane (which caught fire on the runway as we were leaving) back to London via Abu Dhabi, on another plane to Dublin for a 2 night show there, then flew the missus out from the UK for a couple of days in the city to find out what she looked like after quite some time away from the UK.

How was Australia? A bit blurred as I was moving fairly quickly through it Smile. But seriously, what I saw of it I liked, especially the Brisbane river area (had an apartment close to the big bridge for the time I was there) the walk down the floating walkway to the power station looking at the diverse architecture set on the volcanic looking river banks, from glass boxes to colonial balustraded palaces, the great beaches around Sydney when I had some time during the days, loved Natalie Imbruglia when we met in Bondi, Beyoncé was sublime at the hotel in Bayswater, and generally loved the lifestyle out there. I got off the outbound plane via Abu Dhabi and Singapore to find that the guys had arranged a basketball practice, beach barbi and a bash at a mate’s place On the beach in Surfers... just what I needed after getting off a plane at 9am after a 27 hour journey.

Bloody expensive at a 1.45 exchange rate at the time though... and what the hell is that extortionate cigarette tax! Wowser!

It varies, everything is so dry. There's been no chance to do any controlled burns during winter. Fuel loads are sky high, temps are up, ignition is easier, and the firies can't be everywhere at once. Once you rang 000 (999, 911) and you'd get assistance. You can't assume that anymore.

However, not everywhere is on fire at the same time. A few weeks ago I had to go to a rural area that was burnt (and was still burning) - ate at a local restaurant, bought fuel at the local service stations instead of motorway stops, got coffee and drinks at village cafes and shops, even found a shop selling donated goods so proceeds go to local charities. It really helps and people appreciate it.

I'm living in the inner city for now. Can't wait to move to the bush again. Bushfires are a fact of life. When I was 12 I was left with a pair of shorts I was wearing after a bushfire - didn't even have a shirt. You just get on with it, you know, and work together.

So feel free to come down and look around - it won't kill ya, we just pretend it will.

Thanks for asking, cobber. MY11 SD4 SE Auto

Enjoyed my time in Mooney Mooney not so fussed in Sydney maybe same as over here I hate cities, from there down to Tasmania !! Absolutely loved it.

Shame about deaths and damage done, hope it sorts itself out soon and there is no more loss of life.

Perhaps after 1st February we can be pals again . . . ? Might make the Shiraz a bit less expensive. Everyone can spread it - Anyone can catch it. Stay home - the life you save can be your own!

I was always told that people from Oz only come to the UK, so they could revisit the crimes of their ancestors ???
