P1889-14 - Traction Reduced - Pump performance open circuit

Well now i know just how different it is to drive a 2WD Freelander2 in heavy rain/half flooded roads. I think i used to underestimate just how much torque the SD4 puts out, not any more. It can probably wheel spin for miles in 2WD!

Yesterday when my better half went to pick up the kids, she got the 'Gearbox fault - Traction Reduced' warning. Having plugged in the computer the Rear Diff Control Module is giving me a P1889-14 permanent fault for "Oil Pump Performance - Circuit short to ground or open"

The IPC warning clears over night, but comes back within 500 yards of driving when cold. Stays on regardless once warm.

A quick search here brings up at LTB (LTB00795NAS1) for which the UK version is pretty much the same, so coupled with some other reading, it looks like i'm getting a new pump as soon as Bell Engineering can fit me in.

Its a bit annoying since i had the car in for a service on the Haldex about 2 months ago, although given the cost, i suspect they only changed fluids. The garage did comment it was clean fluid that came out, unlike the transmission sludge.

Anyway, the questions I can't seem to answer from forum searches;

1) Can this be caused by a failing battery/alternator? Both the alternator and battery seem okay under test.

2) Is the 'Rear Differential Control Module' actually in the pump? The wiring diagram seems to suggest this. I've obviously got power/comms to the module but I wonder if there is additional wiring between an ECU and the pump which is not shown and could be the cause.

3) Its a 2 hour drive to Bell Engineering. The car will obviously be in 2WD. Does this pose any risk to drive line components? I suspect not but I'd like to check i'm not going to accidentally murder the car on the way!

Cheers

Have you checked the wiring, it’s not unknown for it to rub on the chassis

The RDCM is the module on the side of the Haldex unit

P1889-14 is a known issue. Requires a new pump and RDCM firmware update
Be worthwhile putting a new filter in it at the same time Thumbs Up

Cheers Mikey!

RCDM is up to date according to my SDD (DH52-4C045-AB) although I wasn't online at the time.

Assuming I can get it in to Bell it will get a service at the same time. Its probably something I can do myself, but there would always be this niggling doubt.

Went under the car the other week to check the wiring, it looked like i'd entered a plowing competition;

The tiny bit of wiring between the pump and RDCM is fine, in good condition, plug is secure and clean on the inside;

I see what you mean about the wiring running on the chassis, the plastic wrap is marked with rust, so the inevitable is likely. I suspect the cable tie is on the wrong place and the cable is expected to loop over the metal work. I'll put some protection on.

For the sake of reliability, its booked in to Bell Engineering next month for a pump and service.

Then it can have some armour Very Happy

I had the same on my previous FL2, (a 2008 one,) I took the Haldex pump motor off and found the brushes were quite badly worn, I managed to "tweak" it a bit so they made better contact and it solved the problem, it would have needed a replacement motor eventually bu I sold the car before that happened and as far as I know it's still going strong.
