Should the Overland LR CLub let a Freelander 2 owner join?

Well, I got back to the Spanish Overland (Todo Terreno) LR club about my decision not to get a Defender or Disco, which were the ones they were recommending as the only proper LR models for 4x4.

I said that I'd decided to get a FL2 after I give my Evoque back, and it seems they are OK with that! There's one vocal member with one and he seems to follow the authentic models OK!

In the same message the guy said I ought to pay and join up and come along in my Evoque to the next meet to get an idea of the scene. It's just 30€ a year and I'd get a sticker!

To be honest, I'm not sure I'd want to go anywhere a FL2 can't go. Not because I'm 'afraid', but just because I might find it a pain in the butt to be revving engines and acting macho for hours on end. Green laning yes, full off-road no.

Probably my age ..... Neutral Whistle

So, would you join the official off-road club? They even go to places like Africa and everything ...

I'd not want to do serious off roading in my daily driver, risk of damaging it would put me off. Greenlaning should be easy and non damaging.
If I wanted to seriously off road I'd get a cheap 2nd 4×4 which could take the abuse and the daily driver would be safe. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

our daily driver was a 18 month old 2006 FL1

I took out the back seats, fitted a roof tent, sump guard, got a second spare wheel and a big box of spares (only used the filters), and we drove to Morocco over the mountains and into the Sahara with a group of other 4x4s. more importantly we made it back home.

At the start I got a lot of grief about the hairdressers car, several days in when one of the RRs blew it's engine and the Nissan wrecked its gearbox, maybe a light car with good power to weight ratio wasn't such a bad idea.

By a Freelander auto, fit underbody protection (the larger LR do), and a decent set of tyres, get some experience and you will be very surprised just where LRs smallest offering will get you. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

Stick some larger tyres on the car & let the pressure down for off road & that will solve 90% of issues.

Down under tracks are being chewed up by cars with 2 inch or higher lifts & 37 inch tyres digging forever deeper ruts or doing 100kph on stone covered ground.

That's a great testimony to the car and your skills! It's also an example of prejudices against those doing something different.
If that trip is within the capabilities of the FL2, then that's probably enough for me. I'm not into extreme 4x4 trialing, probably something related to age!!
Thanks again for the information. Makes car and model choice easier!
