Few general queries...

Picked our XS up on the weekend and are very pleased and impressed. Very smooth all around.

Anyway, few little queries...

Where is the light sensor(s) for the auto lights?
What is that bump in the centre front, top of the dash?
Where is the microphone for the integrated telephone operation?
Is that little grilled piezo buzzer looking square to the side of the steering column the parking sensor sounder?

Rear audio controls. Am I right in understanding that you could theoretically be listening to three different audio sources, e.g. CD over the speakers, radio via one of the rear headphone outputs and auxilliary input via the other headphone output? In that situation each has their own control (except the auxilliary has no concept of forward/back controls)
If the same source is being listened to then the main controls have priority, i.e. if the rears switch back to listening to the CD they can't then use the transport controls unless the main set then switches to another source?

We have the alpine 'premium' 9 speaker audio system as fitted to an XS spec. It says "digital" in small letters beneath the FM button which, according to the manual, suggests that it is DAB enabled but I don't think it is. Should it be or is it just a case that the same head unit is used in the higher spec'd DAB enabled option?

As said, very pleased, taking it easy when pulling the front belts out though, can feel that they are going to wear the trim if they are not lifted clear.

Also, never had so many courtesy lights on a car! Two main cabin lights plus two map lighs, two vanity mirror lights, glovebox light, bootspace light, foot lights, under door lights (I assume they are the puddle lights), wing mirror lights. And a power socket in the boot for good measure (and a powered cool box I suppose... Thumbs Up )

Love the optional approach and walk away lighting as well (and window control) - I can see the oportunity for lots of fun in car parks with those Laughing ... And the auto lock on driveaway, and the auto mirror power fold Very Happy

Thanks all! FL2 TD4 XS manual, XS style pack, Martinique Blue

Hi Magic Man

Welcome to the forum, glad you're enjoying it.

Hopefully I can help with a couple of points for you

Magic Man wrote:

Behind the rear view mirror, at the top of the windscreen, both your light and water sensors are in here

Magic Man wrote:

I thought it was a sunlight sensor for the aircon, supposed to help it work better in automode, but I could be wrong
Magic Man wrote:

In the little grills, in the area where the cabin light is, just above the rear view mirror

Magic Man wrote:

I presumed this was an alrm sensor, think the parking sensor noise comes from the stereo

Yes

Don't know, you'd need to try it, and find out, never plugged anything in, or played with it, so can't help there

Unfortunately, it doesn't have it, unless you've specced it, I guess they save money by only having one button design.

Ahh right, that makes sense.

Really..., didn't think of that.

Makes sense too!

We have a central box in the roof with four grilled piezos behind, two each side, which I assume is the volumetric alarm stuff. The other grill could be related though, similar looking design.

Cheers for that, as long as we've got what we're meant to have. No real loss...

I think all those Alpine systems say digital and that I'm almost sure I've seen a picture which had FM and DAB on it - so that must be the proper digital radio

I'm assuming also that there'd be a DAB aerial on the top if it was the DAB version... FL2 TD4 XS manual, XS style pack, Martinique Blue

Page 242 of the handbook shows DAB button. I think the DAB aerial is in one of the rear side windows and the FM aerial in the other one

Not in my manual Smile page 244 lists the dab stuff and shows the FM/DIGITAL button as opposed to the standard FM button. Ours has that /DIGITAL on the button but don't think it has the DAB module fitted.

Can't try now, my wife is out in it... Thumbs Up FL2 TD4 XS manual, XS style pack, Martinique Blue

Mines a 2008 SE and doesn't have a power socket in the boot - I think this is an 09 standard fitment. As regards the handbook its a 2007 print and definitely shows DAB on the FM button. My FL is like everybody elses and says FM digital but definitely hasn't got DAB.

Didn't spec the boot supply so assume it's standard (XS spec in this case at least)

Yep, looking again at the specs online seems as though the DAB is an option on these sets, assume it's a plug in module effectively. As said though, not something I was really wanting anyway... FL2 TD4 XS manual, XS style pack, Martinique Blue

I wanted DAB when I ordered mine (makes it easier to listen to the cricket, no real reason otherwise) but was told it would be a special order as no cars were built with it. As that would have taken me into the 2009MY, and HSE would then have lots of exterior plastic crap and cost £3000 more I decided to not bother!

I do still have the 'Digital' button though.

Not quite a determining factor in choice of car, but very important that the Alpine unit in the XS tunes into to Radio4 LW on the AM band. In fact quite a lot of cars do that - a cricket-mad friend discovered by chance that if he kept tuning beyond what you might expect on the AM he gets to Radio4 - that's in a Yaris.

Yeah, the HSE manages to find LW too Smile

It's not just the Yaris where you can tune past MW, I found LW once by doing just that in a Mazda too.

The service manager at my dealership certainly doesn't understand FM / Digital / DAB. He tried to convince me that the 'digital' tuner in my bog standard GS was a DAB (is has a digital display, therefore it is digital, therefore it is DAB .... honestly thats what he told me DOH.

This was when trying to explain why my radio constantly detunes itself when starting up .... a problem they have never been able to fix !!!

Hope Volvo is better Whistle Stornoway Grey GS ... What a fine motor Smile ... but not any more ... Big Cry ... psst look at my gallery!
Company cars ... a thing of the past - May 2013.
