Good afternoon fellow "Landies"
I have a 2013 Freelander 2, Auto, SD4 HSE which I have serviced regularly. HOWEVER, I now find that although Land Rover do not include this in their service schedule, it is recommended that the oil in the "Haldex" unit is changed every 2 - 3 years. Having bought this as a used vehicle, I can find no record of this being done prior to me owning it and to my knowledge it certainly has not been included on any of my service schedules. Can anyone throw light on this subject for me please ?

Loads of info regarding this on the forum. Basically although the same set up is used by other manufacturers who do include oil changes as part of servicing, Land Rover state that the haldex and diff are sealed for life and therefore do not require any oil changes. Many owners do not agree with this and as a preventative measure have the haldex and diff serviced and oil changed during routine servicing.
(Rightly or wrongly) the Freelander has a reputation for noisy diffs and haldex failures which many people think is because the oil is never changed in those units. However until recently I had a 2012 Freelander which I sold with 152,000mls on it which was still on its original diff and haldex including original oils . It had had no problems or repairs other than normal servicing where as other owners have reported several diff failures on very low mileage cars.

Land Rover say it does not need a regular service on the Haldex, your vehicle will have a GEN 4 and Volvo which run a very similar Haldex system recommend every 40k or less.

But the expert, Austen at Bell Engineering recommends a service about 40k. This involves a new filter and new oil and a clean of the pump.

I have a 2013 63 plate just done 43k and I took it to Austen 3 weeks ago for a service, he said it needs doing now and prevention is the best plan.

The cost is £180 including vat at Bell and he does a good job with a drive in service, he comes highly recommended on this forum, he also sells a Haldex service kit with everything you need and the right amount of oil, there are plenty of info on this forum on how to complete the service

Its not just the Haldex, it's the rear diff, front transfer case and gearbox too.
