I’ve a decent size patio in the back garden that has 2 different types of slabs. We’ve just had a new back step put in yesterday with sandstone slabs and it’s showing the patio up for what it is , Old.
There’s nothing wrong with the original patio, no loose slabs or anything.
My question is can you put sandstone slabs on top of the original patio? Obviously the sandstone slabs will be cemented in. Do it now ! Your a long time dead !!

It might be worth giving the old slabs a wash with the pressure washer which will help with the appearence. I've saved the cost of new slabs several times by giving them a good wash.

After the pressure wash try something like wet and forget for moss and algae it seems to sort of bleach things back to the original colour.

I power wash the slabs in spring and autumn. I even used a chemical to clean the slabs , the original ones have been down for about 25yrs and the newer ones about 18. There’s a distinctive colour difference than is shown up even more with the new sandstone slabs/steps.
There’s nothing wrong with the original slabs , ie no cracks,no loose ones etc , all solidly down.

or you could put down that light coloured resin surface, a bit like beige coloured tarmac but more of a gravel effect.

I'm a civil engineer by trade and can assure you that providing the existing slabs are stable, they make an excellent base for new slabs. Suggest you get the same style as your new ones but as thin as possible, and lay on a thin mortar bed. Similarly, existing wall tiles make an excellent base for new wall tiles.

I had a patio laid a few years ago with reclaimed concrete slabs, this was due to me running out of cash after a large house extension. A few years later I got the same builder to lay me an Indian stone patio. As the old patio hadn’t moved he laid the new stuff on the old patio. The new patio has been fine and hast moved at all. In spring and autumn I wash the patio down with a mixture of thin bleach and water, let it stand a few minutes then jet wash it and the patio comes up a treat. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.
