Car Navi Player - Apple Car Play Retrofit

Hi folks,

I'd like to install an Apple Carplay capable unit in the cubby (currently empty). On the surface, this seems like a simpler/safer option than replacing the headunit (no issues with parking sensors, steering wheel controls or sub woofer) and I prefer having the GPS display higher up.

In my mind, all you should need is a capable android tablet of the right size and connect its audio to the aux-in of the existing sound system... and obviously power it.

However, I came across this:

Does anyone have any experience of this system? There seems to be an awful lot more going on than seems needed? Could be interesting, but it bothers me that it has a second speaker and we know nothing about the unit itself and how capable it is.

Anyone any insights or links to alternative systems?

I have been reading through the various cubby retrofits people have attempted - GPS units and tablets. In particular this thread: https://www.freel2.com/forum/topic13547-90.html

The last updates are quite old and the tablet models mentioned are hard to get and old. I wonder has anyone tried a tablet install in the cubby more recently?

The raspberry pi + touchscreen would be perfect except that the officially supported touchscreen is too wide. I wonder if you removed the bezel would it work?
