It is 20V but with that setting I got the false readings in my photos. There must be a problem with my multimeter on that setting.

For now the problem seems to have stopped and I have no idea why. I am still planning on fitting the earth I have purchased when it arrives and cleaning up all the terminals at the same time.

I think that could very well sort it it sounds electrical.

Always check which are the + and - terminals on the battery - the colour of the wires are not standardised. The earth is usually black and the positive red but this is not always so. On my father-in-law's Corsa C the positive wire is black and negative is brown. You should have seen the spark when I connected my battery to the wrong terminal when jump starting his car.

Also, as other have said the electrode tips of the multimeter need to be pressed onto battery terminals (they are lead and soft) to ensure a good connection otherwise the resistance will be high and errors will result. Jules

My car has continued to start since this first episode but I have now fitted a secondary earth cable from the Black terminal to the starter motor bolt just to help things out.

That extra strap is always a good idea fingers crossed yours is sorted now.
