The thing that makes me still worried a bit is the electronics involved. Won't it do anything that would impact the mechanism?

The transmission takes information from its sensors:
- transmission input speed
- transmission output speed
- transmission fluid temperature sensor
- switches from the gear lever
Also comunicates with:
1) Engine ECU for:
a) engine temperature info
b) throttle possition info
c) cruise control info
d) telling to engine ECU when to reduce engine torque for smoother shift
2) ABS ECU - for road speed.
Based on all these information gearbox ECU can determine in any moment all the information needed in order to change or to not change gears efficiently.
Imagine, just by changing firmware (the program inside ECU) you can optimize and actuate anything. And as long as "the program" is written correctly, all is OK. You can't damage the mechanism.

Just a few weeks ago I had mine in at the dealers as the mpg was poor and the shift changing back down when slowing down seemed a bit 'early' - They did something to the Engine and Gbox ECU and for exactly the same driving style I'm getting 26/27 mpg (was 22 +/-) Thumbs Up

PS: The option that says on Wikipedia that "One aspect of the advanced nature of the electronics is at idle, it automatically selects neutral gear to reduce internal temperatures and improves fuel economy." is disabled on FL2

Any idea why did they disable it?

It's an off-road oriented car.
Imagine you are on a slope and you are stopping.
The transmission thinks that you are on a street at traffic lights and changes into neutral - bad guess and choice. Laughing
You suddenly need all the torque available in order to not fall into the precipice below and the transmission is in neutral... BAD COMBINATION! Laughing
