MY14 Sat Nav lost its bearings

Well since yesterday and today my Sat Nav has lost its bearings. Coincidentally there is an update for the maps now available.

Has anyone else experienced this ?

The satellites reached what they call a "roll over".

the current USB map is for 2018/19 and is available from several internet providers, I have been told that last year the update was release in late May so we should have a new one in a few weeks time.

The satellite date roll over was discussed a few weeks ago in a separate thread. MY13 HSE Lux Santorini Black Gone

This may be a silly question. Why do people still use an old inbuilt sat nav when your smart phone has a much better option?

Because it is illegal to even touch a mobile phone while driving a car, so during the journey if you need to change something (even to zoom to see something better) your breaking the law.

Also phones have a small screen which is not so easy to read and could cause the driver to take their eyes off the road for that second or so too long.

But yes, the software and mapping info is much more up to date than inbuilt systems.

Quote from the RAC site on the 2018 Mobile Device Law

"It is no excuse to say you’re simply following the mapping on your hand-held device and that's why you've picked it up. The mobile phone law specifically refers to this, stating it is illegal to use a hand-held mobile to follow a map.

If you wish to use smartphone navigation or a mapping app, fix the phone to the windscreen or dashboard, so it’s in clear view for use while driving (but not obstructing your view), without requiring you to hold or interact with it."

David

That's not true. You can touch your phone while it is fixed in the holder.

I set it all up before I go, put it in the holder and then set off. I'll only touch the screen to take an alternative faster route.

It's much better than using an old system. Only the cars that are linked up to google maps and traffic alerts have a good inbuilt system.

Well that's the info on the RAC site specifically covering Mobile use in vehicles and was updated in July 2018 (the law). Regards

Brother has CarPlay activated on his DS, and now has the option of Sygic, Waze, Google Maps or Apple Maps. In the 3 months that he has had it, he hasn't gone back to the LR Navigation system once, as all four of the aforementioned knock it into a cocked hat. Looks like this will be the future for JLR, in theory, this should reduce the list prices by not having to have their own sat Nav system installed.

Then again, this is JLR that we are talking about, so I doubt that ANY prices will ever go southwards.... MY13 HSE Lux.......faultless since new.

Mobile phones and in-vehicle technology
Rule 149
You MUST exercise proper control of your vehicle at all times. You MUST NOT use a hand-held mobile phone, or similar device, when driving or when supervising a learner driver, except to call 999 or 112 in a genuine emergency when it is unsafe or impractical to stop. Never use a hand-held microphone when driving. Using hands-free equipment is also likely to distract your attention from the road. It is far safer not to use any telephone while you are driving or riding - find a safe place to stop first or use the voicemail facility and listen to messages later.

You may park your vehicle using a hand-held remote control app or device. The app or device MUST be legal, and you should not put other people in danger when you use it.

Laws RTA 1988 sects 2 & 3, & CUR regs 104 & 110

Touching it constitutes using, hence the danger of prosecution.[/i] Regards

David

Indeed, in fact so many manufacturers are now waving the "white flag" and allowing/including Carplay etc within the vehicle system I should guess within a few years there will be no option for an inbuilt SatNav in the brochure. Regards

Don’t quote me but I thought I had seen somewhere the SD slot is under the little tray below the Nav unit. Regards

The one and only advantage to the built in navigation system is that it still computes in a tunnel when the satellites are lost, very handy in the Paris ring roads as you can pick the right lane before the satellites reconnect.
Don't know where the SD card is, only know your model has one rather than a disc my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis
