Bi-annual sabbatical

Just trying to replan my Highlands fishing trips folks and was wondering about a little advice, now to miss the costly motorway services I usually leave here ( Ceredigeon )with full tank refill in Morrisons Wrexham ( £25-£30 ) which gets me to Callender in Scotland usually chuck £20 in there to get me to Morrisons in Fort William to fill up again but what I am hoping is that someone can tell me that the Morrisons in Penrith or Carlisle is not far off the motorway to detour off to fill up there on the way up which would get me to Fort William with only the one stop.

Other stores are available Very Happy

Diolch Thumbs Up

Cheers Dartman could save a lot of faffing that Thumbs Up was thinking about carrying a can but between weight and room thought against it.

Used my first ever self service fuel pump in Llimissol. Laughing now's there a blast from the past.

Just wondered why you are filling up so frequently? I fill at a local Esso run by Tesco then drive up the M5, M6 and M74, then the A82 and A83 to Lochgilphead before filling at an Esso run by Tesco. That’s 460 miles with still 80 or 90 miles of range. You probably lose the money you save by driving off your route.

Fill mine right to brim and it still says 419 max.
Never let tank too low ,maybe getting out of the sticks across Wales before finding a motorway hits my fuel???
Getting off earlier and going up loch Lomond would probably save a bit rather than going further and coming off for Callender but I hate that road with a passion especially after a long run up.

Meet up with mates in Fort William then over to Spean Bridge before across to Arkaig. If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.

Are you saying you do 550 miles to a tank? Anyone else as I must have a problem? If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.

Not around town, but I’ve done this journey enough times to be confident to mention it here. Mpg calculated fill to fill going back to the same pump for the last 8 years is running at 33.12 with a minimum of about 26 and a maximum when driving to and around Scotland and back going up to 41. A fill of 13.5 gallons at 41 mpg gives a range of 553 miles.
Yes, I also hate the road along the West shore of Loch Lomond but after Tarbet towards Inveraray things tend to improve.

Last time I filled up there it was Tesco that's by Lloyds LR in Carlislie off Jnct 43. Confused
However it's always a busy petrol station and I hate faffing around in queues [find Morrisons in Penrith the same].

Go up & down this area fairly frequently [swmbo does a there 'n back every week]
We now always stop and fill up at the Rheged centre at the same Penrith Jnct 40.
Fuel is pretty reasonably priced and there's a great shop, plus you've always got the varied services of the Rheged centre to enjoy and break up the journey.

It's the difference between manual and auto - a manual will easily give 500+ on long runs (I've had 600+ a number of times on long main road runs), but the auto is a lot thirstier (7mpg thirstier according to LR's own figures for the earlier model years, that's perhaps conservative!).

Ah thanks pab Embarassed romp thanks for that too Thumbs Up this is my plan now as the fuel in Callender is pricey and queues ridiculous.

Sorry mods this should have ended up in the mpg section.

England

I used to fill up in Carlsle when I had a tin dog kennel, didn't need it with the Freely as I used a different route, then ditched the tin and could drive from north west of Glasgow to either Dunkirk or Calais without stopping, always had over 20 miles of fuel left, the range left is a bit vague as it calculates on the last average of not sure, I have been down to zero once going up hill then plus 5 on the flat but it's pretty accurate after a long run my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

You may find that you get a better range using a non supermarket fuel. My wifes MPG used to drop significantly using supermarket fuel so the few pennies she saved in filling up meant more frequent visits to the pump

Yours is auto so range a little more limited but in a manual nearer 600 miles on a tank of BP

Had an ED4 on loan and achieved over 50mpg and a range after filling back up of 713 miles

I always use the Morrisons store finder to locate their nearest store, café, petrol etc.
I find them most useful to replenish both the car and ourselves, ready for the next stage.
