Haldex Service & Oil Change ?

Hi All.
This is the first Land river Freelander I have owned, I have a good mechanical knowledge Clutch changes, Cylinder Heads ect, but I have never done any work on a landy, Is it easy enough for me to do a service and an oil change on my Haldex Unit, I have never even seen one. Thank You

Lots of info on this forum and Utube - its also there in the workshop manual - search will find it.

It generally doesnt require any special tools unless yours has the later larger drive flange - so early ones with Gen 3 Haldex are easiest. You need to replace one filter and clean the other and replace with the special haldex oil and pay attention to the correct filling method - it can be done whilst on the car with early models but later ones with Gen 4 Haldex usually require the Haldex to be removed (exhaust and prop shaft too). You need to have a front wheel up so you can rotate the prop shaft to access all the (E10) prop shaft bolts.

Ive done mine 2014 , (the hardest one of all) and I'd do it again but I have access to proper hydraulic car ramps - I wouldnt want to attempt on my drive. Jules

Haldex Service & Oil Change ?

Thanks Jules.

I would have used to search for the answer to my question but I have only started using the forum today so I am still trying to get me head around it, Unfortunately I do not have any Hydraulic Ramps, it would have to be on the drive, so I may consider sending it to a garage.
Thanks Agsin.

Printed this off for my garage as a Haldex was completely new to them... all taken from threads on here:

If you are going to get a garage to do it you might want to take it to Bell Engineering. Look them up on here. He specialises in Haldex and has had nothing but praise from forum members. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

just had my Gen 4 Haldex and diff oils done by Bell Engineering £225 + VAT for lot to be done in about 2 hours. Thumbs Up

yes its a long drive for some, but its a nice area with plenty of B&B/Hotel/Camp sites around and he only works on customers cars Mon - Fri (spends the rest of time rebuilding diffs etc) but if you plan it as a couple of days away in the week you can kill 2 birds with one stone.

As a matter of interest I have a 2014 FL2 with 14,000 miles. Is it an age thing or miles thing with the Haldex requiring servicing? Wondering when I should be looking getting it serviced, be glad of some advice on this question 2014 Freelander 2 XS TD4

LR state the Haldex and diffs only need servicing at 10 years or 150k. Laughing
Other manufacturers that use exactly the same Haldex system (VW/Audi for example) state 4 years and 45k Shocked

With yours at 4/5 years old it wont hurt to have it done, but depending on the mileage another couple of years wont hurt either. But its certainly good preventative maintenance particularly if you intend to keep the car a while. Whilst you are looking at a couple of grand for a brand new haldex etc if it fails, and similar money for a PTU/Front diff failure outside of warranty then £250 is money well spent IMO

I'd be very careful to check that the garage really knows about Freelander Haldex systems. IMO Bell Engineering is the place for FL2 drive line repair/servicing. Jules
