Excuse the numptiness of my question.

The old PC is groaning and wheezing, and I’ve been advised to replace it. What is the easiest way to transfer everything across from old to new? I’m using Windows computers. I’m not interested in forking out for Apple Macs or anything like that. A simple cheap as chips will suffice.

Will my New PC desktop have all the same icons in the same place as the old one. Will the new one still remember my saved passwords? If not is there software that will do this for me? Updated- Waiting for a Scotland v England 6 Nations home win. 24th Feb 2018

You can connect the two together with a USB cable and transfer data files into the same location on the new PC, if any data or file is the same you will get a warning and asking if you wish to over write. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

You could use something like Acronis True Image but I suggest you have the swap over done by a local pro computer person.

Computers don't get slower as they get older, they are just full of cr p and usually in the windows registry. Depending on how much data you have you could do a cleanup using something like CCCleaner and then transfer the lot to a solid state drive using one of the cloning programs like Acronis or Macrium Reflect. If your PC is full of videos etc you could leave that drive in there and just put the system files on the SSD.

The easy data transfer was discontinued with Windows 10 so all new PCs will not have this facility although you may find it on your old machine.

I would also like to shift set-ups, cookies, passwords etc between machines so if you find an easy way please tell.

I lost trust in CCCleaner after this.

I always download cccleaner direct from piriform. Like a lot of free software (even Firefox etc) you sometimes find yourself on one of the download sites where God only knows what you might be getting in addition. Some of the worst ones are for updating drivers. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I’ve just swapped the 1TB hdd (the original mechanical drive) for a 1TB SSD in my 2012 laptop. 15 minutes for the physical remove drive and replace with new drive but an all night job for the data transfer. I’ve gone from not being able to do anything for sometimes 10 minutes from starting it up to under a minute. Same data, just a different drive technology. Saved me from buying a new laptop which was on the cards. The SSD came with access to acronis which takes you through the process step by step.

Large memory stick setup the new computer, keep the old turned on copy everything you need onto a memory stick and put in the same place on the new computer this way you don't delete anything from the old until you are sure it's in the right place on the new pc. 128gb memory sticks are cheap if you have a lot of data. Or an external harddisk.

If the memory stick isn't large enough for all the data simple just copy some over write what you copied for instance if it's images and a huge directory put them in name order do a-BLAH make a note of it copy them, put the memory stick back in original pc and then copy BLAH-NEAREND and repeat... 2010 Freelander2 TD4_e GS
