Wheel direction indicator

Whilst at Kielder yesterday a symbol appeared on my display I had never seen before. It was indicating which way my front wheels were pointing. Not sure how useful this is, but I was wondering why it comes up. It was only there for a few seconds when I was going round a sharp corner.

I tried to find information in the handbook about it but can’t seem to find any mention of it.

Can anyone shed any light on this feature?

Only works in mud and ruts I think, its handy if you fall asleep waiting for discos to get out of the way then forget what angle your steering was at when you stopped.
Its supposed to be helpful when traversing ruts but I find it easier and more accurate to leave the window open and keep looking out at your front wheel. At work

Thanks CG. I was in M&R when it came on. But why does it only come on for a few seconds? I could maybe see some use in it if was on all the time. Is this what it should be like and mine has a fault?

Usually only a feature display when terrain response knob moved from road use. Then only shows when towards the extremes of rack travel and straight ahead ie does not seem to show incremental degrees of wheel direction. It is really usefull when driving in v muddy ruts ets when only way of knowing which way your wheels are pointing is to look out of door window and when playing silly b*****s on frozen surfaces still pining for my 3dr, no removeable hardtop, no drop glass tailgate, no roof rack, no pockets everywhere to stow all that man kit

With looking out for tree stumps and a salad shop, it is amazing you stayed on the tracks at all CG Laughing

I found this flashing on and off a bit of distraction really.

it's designed if you should find yourself stuck in a mud rut and you are steering the cars wheels using the side walls to gain that extra grip, quite often meaning the wheel might have whipped to full lock but your still traveling forwards

Now should your attempts have been successful and you got yourself out of the rut, you wouldn't want to

    * drive back into the rut
    * drive off in the wrong direction
    * drive into the close by tree stump

I had the MUD RUTS program, and the wheel image only showed up once when the wheels pointed in an odd direction. ( I was told that something was wrong Surprised ). You don`t see it when you switch the program on.
It happened to me once in deep snow with "snow-program" too.

NO to the second question.
EDIT: Remark to second question:
Well..., when you corrects the wheel-direction, you will see that the image changes to straight forward position before the "symbol" disappear.

Mine comes up in mud and ruts and one other (but I forget which one) but I dont think it's the snow one........ Whistle

So basically it comes up in two of three modes not including normal. Confused

I've seen it in Mud/Ruts mode, but not done many miles in either Grass/Gravel/Snow or Sand.

I noticed it was intermittent, but I've not figured out a pattern yet. I _think_ it's speed related - as in it shows at slow speeds but as soon as you get much faster than 5mph it goes away. While it's visible it will show the direction of the wheels in one of three positions - pointing left, pointing straight ahead or pointing right. (I don't think the direction of the wheels is a factor in the display being visible, but willing to be proved wrong Smile )

I remember seeing it in normal mode as I turned a sharp downhill bend in icy conditions and the ABS came into play. And I vaguely remember it flashing up briefly when I got a bit of wheel spin on my track, again in icy conditions.
Based on that, I thought it was perhaps an indication that there's a 'differential differential' so to speak. Confused By that, I mean one wheel spinning or locking up independent of the other on that axle.
The snow and ice has almost all thawed here now so I can't easily check. Maybe our northern European friends can shed some more light on it?
