The plate is still supposed to be of a certain size Common sense isn't very common.

So that the vehicle registration number can be clearly read by both humans and machines. If you have to work out what you are looking at it is unlikely that in the heat of the moment of an incident you would remember the registration number you were looking at. If you use the regulation font and size there would be very little deciphering to do as it is very plain.
Regulations here - https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/g...tion-numbe rs-and_number-plates-inf104.pdf

I’ve made over 10,000 registrations and there is no regulations for the size of plate! Size of font yes and the font must be Charles Wright with correct spacing! There must be a reflective backing 11mm all round the number plate but no law stating the plate has to be of a certain size!

You also need to have the suppliers name or postcode at the bottom and BS number. MY14 Kahn Converted Dynamic - Fuji White Ebony/Pimento Interior

Plate is fully street legal.

I've had this Reg. number, 47 years, and up until 5 years I used to make my own plates.
It is currently on a 13" plate with correct, BS AU 145d and post code.
I could shorten down further, as you only need 11mm either end, but this looks out of balance.
Been picked up on, Revenue collecters, so I know that works.

Australia 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Auto Lago Grey

Completely different in Australia, NSW at least. Number plates must be supplied by the registering body, the RMS in NSW, you can't make your own. Even bike rack plates must be their officially manufactured ones. A lot of people hastily mock up a plate for the bike rack so they won't get booked for obscuring the car plate not realizing it's illegal to do so. It's also a big deal if you lose a plate which often happens on a water crossing.
