Changed My Brake Discs
I've had a few advisories on my front discs at MOT time, and recently I have been noticing a bit of judder under braking, so I decided I'd use the current pads and discs over winter and change them in the spring when I take the winter wheels off as they didn't look too bad from the outside (they are the originals actually so 11 years old). However, when I put the winter wheels on the other week, a good chance for a mooch around with a torch, I noticed a tie rod end boot looked ripped, so I thought I would put new ones on and do the discs and pads at the same time.
When the first caliper came off the inner pad gave a hint that the brakes may be in a worse condition than I thought.
There was a delay before the disc came off, as the Torx bolt that holds the disc on to the hub refused to budge, and was quite obviously going to round off quite easily. Every time I change the winter and summer wheels over I always gave these a squirt of ACF50 as I thought they would give problems when the time came to remove them. A hammer and a drift just about got it turning. This was the passenger side, the drivers side Torx would not ever drift out, I ended up having to use an angle grinder with a cutting disc to wear the head away, being really careful not to catch one of the hub studs and really ruin my day.
From the outside the disc didn't look to bad, had a tiny lip on it.
But when I turned it over.... No wonder I had a bit of a judder.
Same with the pads, the outer looked ok, then inner though...... .
I didn't have any replacement Torx bolts for the disc, and if I did I wouldn't have put them back in anyway, I haven't actually got the remnants of the drivers side one out, I think it's there for good.
The Tie rod ends were easy to do, infact when I got the one off with the ripped boot it was actually ok, not complaining though as it got me doing the brakes.

They were certainly past their best
My brake pedal felt a little "soggy" and felt rather inefficient. While they appeared OK, visually, replacing them has transformed the brake efficiency and feel again
