Range Rover couple to receive refund of $283K AUD

An Australia couple who bought a new Range Rover Autobiography in 2015, which turned out to be a "catastrophic failure" (sic), have been awarded a refund (plus interest) of $283000 AUD . The biggest automotive refund in Oz history apparently. The couple are now seeking a further $134K AUD of legal costs - they had to be wealthy to contemplate taking JLR/Dealership to court I expect.

Or if you prefer a more emotive narrative.

One would think any car company would pull their finger out a lot earlier. One unhappy customer is not a good thing in the long run.

I cant imagine its done JLR's image in Oz any good. Not that many people by them anyway - certainly not outside the urban centres. My daughter lives 3 hours drive east of Melbourne and you hardly ever see a JLR vehicle in her area. Jules

JLRA and JLR could learn a thing or two about customer service from this...Mazda!

Hence why my vehicle will never see a JLR dealer for servicing now or in the future which has been totally fault free. MY15

Probably to cover cost of borrowing money (or lost interest on savings) & insurance over this period. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Is the phrase punitive damages?

Realistically if the car was obviously a lemon and LR (through the dealer) refused to admit that the car wasn't of merchantable quality (or whatever the Australian equivalent is) then they should be made to pay for the trouble/distress they have caused, and then pay even more to teach them not to do it again. The unfortunate thing is if LR refuse to honour the warranty, then the dealer is left holding the baby, so win/win as far as LR is concerned.

In The UK it can be fairly straightforward to reject a car (look at the DS forum - lots have) that is not fit for purpose, not sure that the Australians have the same level of customer protection. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

The Freelander & its derivatives do have a dual clutch but it has no relation to a manual gearbox. It has a torque converter which also locks up when it can to be more efficient.
