The crappy Haynes manual (which purports to cover 2014 / 64 plate models) says nothing about the electrical connection to fuel filter (or the electric hand brake for that matter) Jules

Hi Jules, found the same connector whilst poking about today and found this thread after many google searches!
Did you ever get to the bottom of what this connector was for/if I should be worried about it not being connected to anything?

Pic attached, from a 2014 freelander 2 also.
Thanks in advance!

The connector underneath the fuel filter is a water sensor. shows it in the Evoque manual and there is info on the so called electronic rear handbrake

Good day gents, new here but able to contribute...

Indeed a water sensor. underneath the filter is a round threaded hole that takes a water sensor you have to transfer when you replace the filter.

When you screw the sensor into the new filter, it punches through into the inside.

I have found some filters have a water bleed at the bottom, but some have it blanked and only a short bleed "bolt" on top.

Hope it helps.

In 6 years I never got a definitive answer.

Its probably a connection for a water sensor fitted to the Evoque but not fitted to the FL2. Jules

I know of no UK FL2 that had a water sensor in the base of the fuel fiilter, that needed to be transferred over to the new replacement filter.
Maybe its an export only addition for counries with less reliable fuel quality. That would make sense. Jules

When I changed my fuel filter late last year, I noticed that plug but after looking at the underneath of the filter I just left it off.Car has been fine ever since.
