I am not sure if this is good news, or bad.

I am not sure where the money is coming from, but it seems that we are going to design and build our own GPS compatible system.

Yet another unexpected consequence of us leaving the EU is that we are no longer trusted to keep european secrets. Therefore we have been thrown out of the joint Galileo project.

I am sure that this will come as an unwelcome surprise to many as it wasn't written on the side of the Leave bus.

This has been flagged up some time ago on websites linked to GPS systems etc.
We also do not have a rocket system to launch any satellites so we may have to design/build that too. I guess developing are own system would be very expensive and not without issues (the announced feasability study alone is listed as £92M) so it may be better just to pay for access to the European system if allowed, which is doubtful.

Or according to my dad (he's 86) it will be like the good ol' days when you had to use your AA map to find your way around and ask a policeman for directions when you got lost. I think he's looking forward to the re-establishment of hard borders and customs as travelling to France will be more like the adventure it was in the 1960s. Jules

Yep, it's all beginning to hit the fan now - and we are paying £49 billion for the honour of being chucked out of a programme we have largely paid for and led with our scientific expertise.

It's time to chuck out Theresa May and her give in to the EU plan.

We can use the spectrun space that was to be used for Galileo as the remainder of the EU don't seem to know much about it or have the expertise to build the satellites. As for hiring a launch site, it will be as I see much of the other trade, up for hire. For example, I don't see the wine growers of France abandoning the vinyards and paying off all the people just because Britain is not in the EU. They will want their easy export market. Everyone can spread it - Anyone can catch it. Stay home - the life you save can be your own!

Mikey the money is there already for the UK space program, launch sites are up for hire in many countries if the Scotland one isn't ready.
The people are here to do it.

Or.... Get the funds from all the spare Labour seem to have spare ( joke ) If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.

[/quote]The money is from the tax that we pay towards running the country.
If we are going to invest in the future so that our children and grandchildren live in a first world country, then we need to pay up a bit more collectively, and more important, make sure that everyone pays their share.
If we could get back some of the money hidden (via) offshore accounts we could possibly have enough to go to Mars, and still have enough left over for NHS, Care, Police, etc, and a decent road and rail system.
