Another bike rack question when caravanning.

Day to day I have a Thule bike carrier for our bikes. Following a back injury I can no longer lift the bikes to put on the roof carriers, so I’d like some pointers as to which racks will fit on the rear of the F2 when towing that won’t interfere with the van.

I’d prefer not to have a set up that uses the towing bracket etc as it will add to the nose weight when towing. (I think). Updated- Waiting for a Scotland v England 6 Nations home win. 24th Feb 2018

It is immaterial whether you hang the bikes from a rack fitted to the body or tow bar, the weight on the rear axle is the same, you have an extra 100Kg on the tow bar giving you 250Kg max at 60mph or 100kph the legal limit for towing, so more options. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

I had one on the Fl2 and towed with it without problem a few times, (fixed towbar)

They have a extender post that slots in to raise the bikes out of the way when towing, can be tilted down to open the boot also, but not when the caravan attached, as bike would hit a frame Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

This is my set up, had it also on the D3, D4 and many previous vehicles.
Has 8 contact points.
Can tow as well as carrying kayaks, without fouling..... and I can still access the tailgate.
But, I use it to carry only the one bike.

I used a similar rack on the back of my FL2 but rested the bottom bar on the boot handle with most of the weight taken by the top straps so as not to stress the handle too much, just need to remember to remove the rear wiper fuse Whistle

I use the same rack on the back of my Ewok now as well even though they aren't supposed to fit due to the position of the roof spoiler. Mine fits just fine without any stresses on the spoiler or tailgate.

its just a standard boot mounted rack bought from Decathlon years ago for about £50.

I use a witter flange tow bar mounted carrier which bolts on behind the towball. Can take up to 4 bikes. Never actually towed with it on yet but should easily take 2 while giving clearance for the van. Have put 4 bikes in the van previously but adds a fair bit to the weight and always the possibility to scratch the interior if they move about a bit. Had the four on the Disco 2 roof rack before as well but not fun getting them up there, and then there are low railway bridges in France..... Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Caravans have copious space, however their legal weight carrying capacity is minimal, by the time you have added all the necessities it is sometimes impossible to leave a toothbrush on the washbasin without exceeding the MPTLM Laughing my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

That's what the car's for, when I did that run from Scotland the car carried the essentials for a first night on the continent should there be a delay and the restaurants shut, minimum clothes, the van carried the van stuff, (awning BBQ chairs, tables, water carriers and levellers. on the way back 240litres wine in the car, no food, loo empty, bikes left in France with a friend ( come to think of them they're still there) Very Happy, everything just on the limit with a Riech gauge to check it was, well nearly perhaps 20-30Kg gauge inaccuracy Whistle my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis
