SD4 DPF oil.

Hi,

I know it's probably been done to death but I have been searching and can't find a definitive answer.
My MY11 (DPF) SD4 is ready for an oil change and it seems a bit of a minefield as to what spec etc is required. The castrol oil selector doesn't offer anything.... The shell one recommends af-l 5w 30 but that costs a fortune! I have some castrol edge left from my 5 series:

Castrol EDGE 5W-30 LL Engine Oil, 4L https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B011KRAGH8/ref...-zb0CTNB89

Does anyone know if this would be a suitable replacement? As far as I know the 'LL' part of the castrol is long life and I'm guessing that tallies with the 'L' in the shell code too?

Many thanks,

Yes, that's what shell recommends. I was hoping I could use the castrol as I have around 4 litres left.
Still, the shell isn't that much more expensive.
Thanks,

sorry I can't help more
I took ages to find the Oil I needed to change it today.
when all the Filters arrived I took the Opportunity this Afternoon.

When LR called and asked if I wanted to do a secret Shopper (service) at the Dealers and Offered £100 incentive
I then checked online the 48k service cost at £471, Laughed
ordered the Parts including tools for less than £150.00
I did have brake pads in stock though.

Fuel Filter primimg a doddle with a rubber siphon pump from Amazon
and some 8mm hose.

fised price service

I had B service by Harwoods earlier this year for fixed price, the deal now seems to have been taken down from main JLR website.

Try searching 'Land Rover 3 year plus service', still showing up at Lookers and GuySalmon

I don't think the 3+ Service Plan is available anymore. I searched around the internet and found nothing.

I had a call from Grange in Welwyn Garden City to tell me it was time to book in for a service. The price quoted was around £650 Rolling Eyes I queried that and the price reduced to £450 so I said I would think about it
They then called me again a few days later and I said that they were too expensive so they said they could do it for £399 so I said I would think about it and I have had no calls since

Even £399 seems like a lot for an oil and filter change and a check over!! (It would have been cleaned and collected and delivered I suppose!!) I took the car round to an independent this morning

Steve

3rd year/48K mile A service is £339.10 at Lancaster, Erdington
That is for oil & filter, copper washer, pollen filter, screen wash only. (Air filter and fuel filter not part of the service).
About £250+ for labour.

Also at 3 years you are recommended to change the brake fluid too. Jules

Had M J Fews of Charfield near Bristol do my 3rd year service plus mot for £300. They no longer sell new Landies but are an authorised service centre. Non LR courtesy car thrown in. Thumbs Up MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.

having had 3 main dealer services

on Doing My own
I found:

Missing Bolt from Sump guard

spilt brake Fluid (from Fluid change last year ) ?

Pollen Filter with Production Date close to Build date of Car

I think they are Shoddy when doing the Work they are over charging for.

I replaced Brake Pads all Filters checked car over it took me 3-4 hrs taking Plenty of Time and Tea

I now know all has been done correctly.
Main dealer wanted £471 for Filters and oil change
Parts cost me
£59 filters ( oil/air/pollen and Fuel)
£75 ish for Oil (plus 3 litres for next service)
Pagids I had in Stock waiting the need to Fit

36k miles saw under a 3rd of the Pad left so before Winter I have swapped them out.

If you can't get a sensible price from the dealer there are Approved LR agents who are often cheaper but fully approved by LR.. I can recommend TVLR in Gateshead and they have a good reputation on this site. I have heard good things of Lindacre in Ipswich, although have not used them myself.
They show up alongside the main dealers on https://www.landrover.co.uk/national-dealer-locator.html Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

Can anyone advise if this quantum 5W30 oil would be suitable for the SD4? It's what VW recommends for their DPF engined TDIs and can be bought cheaply at any TPS motor factors.
