Car won't start, Any suggestions?

G'day, My FL2 2008 2.2 Diesel stopped yesterday and won't start. Until now it has been flawless, I am really happy with it (it's done 196,000 klm). I noticed the day before it was taking longer than usual for the engine to start, in the morning it took it two cranks to get it going. Then, as I was driving it started to loose power and eventually it came to a complete stop and it won't start any more. The engine turns ok when I try to start it.
I unplugged the fuel line to the filter and it does not push any fuel out of it when I'm cranking it.
Any ideas what the problem could be? Has any one else had a similar experience?
Could it be the fuel pump?

Thanks everyone

About 35,000 ks ago.
I disconnected the line that feeds the filter and there is not fuel getting to it.
Thanks

Empty fuel tank then Yawn

Big mistake just pulling fuel lines off willy nilly as its a suck from the tank system (I believe) as there is no pump in tank to push it up to the engine. As Steve said change the fuel filter and it will then need a bleed and now probably using a vacuum type hand pump. Plenty of info on here on what others have done when changing fuel filters. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

2007/2008 Engine has documented (on here) problem of Exhaust cam breaking (which drives the HP fuel pump) the faults would include low fuel rail pressure.
Any codes?

Joe if the cam had broken it would just die there and then I suspect and would also not have had the day before tantrum but I may be proved wrong, I hope not due to the cost involved. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

My Cam snapped about 4 weeks ago with few symptoms except earlier in day it never started 1st time on 2 occasions (unusual) and complete power failure later the same day.
Diagnostics suggested fuel pump seized and snapped cam.
Hopefully not your problem Sam.

There are many things that prevent a car starting, reading the codes will assist.

This model has a pump in the fuel tank. That is why i tried to see if there was fuel in the line when I cracked it.

The pump in the tank is just to move fuel from one side of the tank to the other. The tank has 2 low points, one each side of the drive shaft. These are one of the lowest points on the fl2 and often the first to touch ground.

I have a workshop manual for the car and it indicates that the pump also serves the purpose of sending fuel to the injectors. I will work on the pump tomorrow to see if I can make it work by feeding it some electrical current. I will update the post after it and let you guys know how i went.

Bob, I replaced the engine with a low mileage salvaged unit.(New cam belt kit and water pump etc)
The unit came with HP fuel pump and system.
My fuel lines/tank have been steam cleaned and flushed.
The A.T.F has been changed (Job that was on my list)

My car had done 163k so really owed me nothing.
Of course I had to make the decision to go ahead or walk away, I think the stuff I have replaced lately made my choice easy.
The car drives as it should and hopefully will last a few more years.

Sam, If that was the case, we would be able to bleed the fuel system by just turning on the ignition. That does not happen unfortunately. (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.

Sam
You have the wrong manual. Is the manual you are looking at for a freelander1 I wonder.
