Keyfob won't eject

My keyfob gets stuck in the holder very occasionally. I can sometimes fix this by staring the engine and stopping it again, but I have had to leave my Freelander 2 parked with the keyfob left in a few times before now!
At the same time the gear position lights by the gearshift are not lit and the green lights either side of the key aren't lit either.
More often just the gear position lights don't light but the keyfob releases ok.
I can't get sport/manual mode when they don't light up.
I noticed that this recently coincided with wet weather but I'm not sure if it was every time.
I am guessing that it's a poor earth or common supply feed wire. I've re-seated and cleaned all the fuses and relays with WD40 and checked inside the centre console for suspect wiring but found nothing. And searched the tinternet.
Has anyone else had this problem?
Many thanks in advance.

I'm in the UK and my Freelander 2 is a 2007 HSE diesel.

do you only have one fob? if two does it do it with both of them? Common sense isn't very common.

tip on sticky fob,one was sticking due to the fact they slightly swell I believe,so I asked my wife to order a new casing from e bay,she never did and now 3 months later its stopped sticking.

I sometimes find if I push the fob in too hard rather than just letting be drawn in it will stick a bit when trying to get it out, but usually a bit of a hardish prod will enable it to self eject.
