Passenger Door Mirror

Does anyone else have this problem?

The nearside mirror has a high magnification thereby creating a huge blindspot, especially on motorways.

Also reversing a trailer gets quite exciting when trying to judge distances.

Mind you, mine is a commercial with covered rear windows, ie a Van, so reversing and pulling out of offset junctions is always a matter of luck.

I'm thinking about trying to source a plain mirror.

Dare I ask you caravaners if you have any suggestions or experiences, but maybe you never look behind Exclamation

It depends on the width of your trailer: if wide enough, maybe you could use one of those caravan mirrors that are fixed on the standard ones. If your trailer is smaller than your car, it's not advisible though as dangerous for oncoming trafic.

Never had a problem judging with the near side mirror, I tow with Freelander 2 and if I come up to an off set junction i try if possible to stop in a position to get the best view possible through the mirror. Failing that as the mirrors are adjustable electrically i adjust the mirror to get the view of the road required. I also drive a 3500kgs van and never have a problem with junctions in that either. I just adjust the mirror to get the desired view. Very Happy p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

As far as I can tell both n/s and o/s mirrors are some form of graduated convex and both present very similar views on my 57 plate GS. In my opinion these present very good views to the rear and sides - even when being overtaken / overtaking. Much better than my previous vehicle!

Is it possible that different mirror glasses are fitted to the commercial variant?

When towing our 2.3 metre wide caravan I fit Milenco mirrors that are flat (the law requires a view down the side and to the rear and although the FL2 mirrors almost do this, I feel reassured by their use). The FL2 is only 2.05 m inc mirrors IIRC. The Milencos allow me to see traffic behind the van far better than the FL2 mirrors alone.

Judging distance to the rear of the outfit when reversing is a bit 'hit and miss' for me - it's ok if you're turning and can see the rear corner clearly - but virtually impossible in a straight line!! Other than swmbo shouting 'stop' at the appropriate moment, I have fitted a remote-control electric 'motor mover' to manouvre the caravan after unhitching - makes it a doddle and she doesn't complain about the rain or cold!

Like Firestar I also use Millenco mirrors when towing. I use the grand aero version which looka bit big but are only lightweight. They are easy to fit and remove and once set can usually be re fitted without any further adjustment.
