18 inch AT tyres in Oz - what's available?

Hi all

Brand new to Freelander ownership, but seasoned LR owner.

I grabbed a MY11 SD4 SE and I'm appalled by what seems to be a paucity of AT tyres for the 18 inch rims.

Do 255/60 tyres work ok - it's marginal negative scrub, but 255 seems excessively wide.

What are your recommendations? I've run Cooper AT3 and ST on other vehicles and love them but the prices are nasty these days.

I like to stick under $200 a corner.

17 inch has lots of choice ...

Thanks a lot

Jeff

Yes, I fitted 255 x 60 R18 and no rubbing at all. (Pirelli Scorpion ATR).
The ride is much smoother and ground clearance somewhat better.
Had them in the dunes and the car performed marvelously (1 bar). 2013 SD4 SE (hers)

How many mm gap do you have between the 255 rear tyre & strut? With my 235/60 R18 there is exactly 10 mm. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

I have about 3 mm to 5 mm gap. (guessing now from eye-balling the gap). Checked the inside tyre walls on a number of occasions and no rubbing marks front or rear. No rubbing either at full lock steering in front.

Thank you. I have to get four 235 tyres or six 255 tyres (2 spares) & obviously don't want it to be an expensive mistake!

The 18 inch rims turn the car into a poodle on our outback roads & a bit more rubber in the diameter would help a lot, especially at 25 PSI on our corrugated tyre chewing roads! I distroyed one tyre on the Gibb River Road, dead tyres everywhere, especially the eastern end.

25 PSI on a rock. One morning the temperature dropped to 4C & the tyre pressure dropped from 25 to 23.

A pity you can't get some 17's. The ideal size for this car is 245/70/17 if you are doing off road. Vesko picked up a batch of 6 for a reasonable price. You need to check at Ford Mondeo or Volvo wreckers maybe? 255's may go close to pushing the back floor up?

Yep, I've seen a few 17 inch XC90 sets around for not much money, usually there are only 4 though. I'll wait, I've only had the car three days ...
