Servicing Issues

My 56 plate SE has just had a 30,000 miles service (at 26,000 miles). The oil (65 litres of it) and filter was changed, as you'd expect. I checked the oil at the dealer, and it was pitch black.

I was advised that it was impossible to get all the old oil out of the sump - which is obvious, but I'd have thought that 65 litres of oil would be the majority of the oil and as such, would show some signs of 'newness'. I cant see the filter, to see if it has been changed/polished (dont know where to look).

Have I just paid £300 for a thimble full of screenwash?

Coincidentally, the B-Pillar covers and seatbelts are being changed (by request from me), and there is a modified part for this now, to prevent the wear and 'tear' (hopefully not), on the pillar/seatbelts.

you wouldn't be able to check the oil filter anyway, they only change a 'paper' element inside the oil chamber, an other thing they probably charged you an Environment handling charge I.E. disposing of the oil and filter.

Just checked the Invoice - quotes CASTROL 5W-30 QTY 65 although have checked with a very helpful independent garage and they also laughed at the 65 litres.

Looks like a flawed accounting program/system.

Easy - the dealer invoicing quantity is 1/10 of a litre; 65 of those = 6.5L so you are all right.

The cleanliness of the new oil depends on how long they let the sump drain and so how much old (black) oil was left when they refilled the sump with fresh golden oil. The refill oil never stays as clean as the first fill becuase it picks up trapped carbon from any old oil left and from around the engine. Gone... 2013 XS TD4 Manual Firenze Red

I had the second service done last week (at 2yrs/20000 miles) and when I checked the oil the following day, it was turning black again, but you could definately tell that it was fresh oil as there was still signs of the "golden"colour in it.
