Poking around under the bonnet (as one does when bored!) I've found a long flexible tube flapping about and in danger of getting caught up in the cooling fan or, worse still, the timing belt.

One end is connected to a spigot on the bottom of the fuel filter but the other end is floating free. The tube is a very flexible, soft white (clear) silicon about 10mm diameter and around 300-400mm long. Does anyone know where the loose end should go?

It's the pipe that connects to the fuel filter drain on the right hand side of the filter top.

On opening the drain valve the pipe carries any water in the fuel filter away

So, are you saying it is only meant to be connected at one end and clipped somewhere to keep it out of trouble and stop it flapping around?

Yes it is in effect a drain from the filter.

If you are worried about it flapping around I am sure you could cable tie it to something

Just remove it. It was probably fitted to direct the drained water into a container rather than letting fuel/water spill over the engine and they forgot to remove it. It should just pull off. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

I thought it was something that had been displaced rather than left behind...but now I've given it a tug and removed it i can see that it was just a piece of hose on the drain spigot from the filter.

That does lead me to another thought...If the garage were supposed to be replacing the fuel filter, why would they have connected anything to the drain spigot of the new filter at all? 2012 SD4 XS Santorini Black

The standard service schedule only replaces the fuel filter every 2 years and drains water from it in between. Its a pig of a job to do and I bet most garages dont bother. I tried it on mine; access is really difficult and I couldnt get anything to drain out so gave up and will wait till I change the filter in Sept. Jules
