A lot depends on a number of factors which can only be assessed when the engine is stripped.

Any fault codes? You will need a bit more info than this to get help, could be an injector problem. What is the evidence for it being on the exhaust? What is your mileage? Smoke implies unburnt fuel. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Split turbo hose doesn't cause knocking, as most have said get an an error code or codes, I believe that an injector problem can cause knocking, if the car has gone to safe mode then there will be an error code. Had a similar problem with another make of car, knocking from the top of the engine, though didn't go to limp mode, engine lumpy and car juddered under load, problem disappeared after refuelling within a 100 miles. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis
