Yer I can't really sum it up, thanks though! I will be taking it to the garage on Monday so I will let you know, it would just be nice to have a rough idea before! |

Not an expert but it sounds like it could be a bearing in a pulley or tensioner, but lots of things being run off of one belt makes pinpointing it a bit trickier. On a couple of different cars we had similar noises to that due to a failing alternator and water pump.

Bearing, Alternator, Idler Pulley, you won't know till it's stripped down and and bearings spun. |

Add belt tensioner to that list. Cheaper than a bearing but not necessarily a warranty item. |

Now, for my two cents as this has just started occurring on my 2007 2.2TD4 GS...

My tensioner in that area failed a few weeks ago Not expensive to change but a pain when it happened on a journey at night. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Sounds to me like a failed bearing. Derek Hill

My son had a noise a bit like that on his Renault Clio some years ago, a week or two later the waterpump failed and threw off the cambelt with the usual consequences £££. Since most cambelt problems are are actually waterpump or tensioner or idler failures rather than the belt snapping I would get this checked out rapidly. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I’d go for the one way clutch pulley mine did this takes about a hour to change pretty easy just take the aux belt off and spin it by hand it’ll be solid both ways. |

The sound I'm getting is definitely more like the original poster's video... The last fifty miles or so, it has managed to shut-up, although I suspect it will be back soon... I gave the alternator pulley area a spray with GT-85 spray (and gave the belt a wipe immediately afterwards in case it eats into the belt). I have ordered a replacement pulley which appears to match the one currently on the alternator- it has a black cover over the end with a small dimple/hole in the centre. Reg check appears to confirm that's the right part. Now, is it an easy job to replace with the alternator still in place? Didn't I read somewhere that the "special tool" needs to be modified in order to reach into the space? If it's too much of a fiddle, it'll be going to a garage to be fitted... As for the water pump comment... Mine was replaced in 2016 when the cam belt was done, so it shouldn't be that thankfully. "We're in danger, we've got to get out." "What are you talking about?" "I've been called a ponce." Last edited by Lord Rich Tea Biscuit on 5th May 2018 4:21 pm. Edited 1 time in total |
