Most Vauxhall's are re-badged Opels, the exception being the Astra which is UK built, PSA bought Chrysler or the old Rootes Group (Hilman, Humber and Sunbeam) back in the 70's, the last PSA car built in the UK was the Peugeot 405 I think, I suspect both Vauxhall and Opel will both disappear as neither have a French factory and the French government has quite a stake in PSA along with Renault my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

According to the FT the only thing that has saved the Vauxhall factory is that they have a big paint shop so that they can continue making vans. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I always lease my vehicles, it may seem expensive to some but I have always found the cost over 3 years to be comparable with the depreciation over the same period. I leased 2 FL2's but when it was time to change I got a quote for a Dynamic and fell off my chair - LR had seriously upped the prices and for a lot less I managed to get my first X3 full loaded and have never looked back. Needs must, I suppose, but you’ve suffered enough; here’s hoping that something at least half decent falls within budget next time |

Australia has a massive inquiry into the financial industry. One of the many areas has been the vast number of loans which the lenders have not been doing any checking of borrower's living expenses. Even worse the lenders have been doing a lot of fudging figures so people can borrow even more money. The larger the loan the larger the commission the broker gets!

I’m in the always pay cash camp...but always for an older vehicle. My take on the finance deals is that PCP etc is a cheap way to get hold of a new car, but still more expensive than running an old car. Just like the mortgage business, by separating the cost of an asset from the affordability, you allow the price to rise way above what it would otherwise be. I worry for the kids in the office, earning half my salary, but who are all running new cars (‘worth’ more than mine) on PCP deals and who also have signed up to 35 year mortgages. 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

Mortgage paid, Car paid, No dept. banks love me !!! not. Every day count myself lucky to be in this situation as I've been the other end too. If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.

You may well be right suckfish but I for one will not be going down that route until they can produce a car that can be recharged in minutes not hours. A pal of mine has a Tesla and when I asked him how he would mirror the trip I make each year to Thurso (600 each way) he responded "with great difficulty". MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.

I suspect that that technology does exist - fast charging.

I used to pay cash but a few years ago I realised two things 1. the dealer will often give you a better deal if you take some finance (one even told me so). On the last two cars I bought the extra trade in value just about covered the interest payments anyway. 2. I reckon that borrowing money even at 6% is a good deal as I can easily better that with my investments (some did over 20% last year) and I can always pay it off early. Remember, as the accountants say, it's the bottom line that counts. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto 5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto Now Discovery Sport P250 MHEV SE |

It has happened before and it was about digital cameras and especially Kodak. I worked for a large IT company and we had a call from Kodak senior management in 1997 about the threat from digital cameras (which ironically they invented - think Tesla) and which they thought would hit the market in about 2002 and they couldn't work out what to do to preserve their highly profitable film business. We suggested becoming a digital camera manufacturer but there was too much vested interest in taking profits from film rather than investing in a new area of business. They were spot on with the timing and their profits went over a cliff edge after 2003. Sounds a bit like JLR and diesel? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto 5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto Now Discovery Sport P250 MHEV SE |
